Obama's Birther Joke Just Doesn't Get Old

President Obama has showed time and time again that he can take a joke — but don't forget that he can make them too. Be it an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel or while addressing the House Republicans, Obama can land one of his perfect wry zingers. And once a year, he steps it up a notch. That's when he takes the stage at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Before he to show you what he's got this Saturday, take a moment to remember a joke of Correspondents' Dinner past. That time when Obama's Lion King birther joke officially became the funniest moment of his presidency.

The year was 2011, and Donald Trump was also in the news then for being an annoying jerk. This time around, his target was Obama, who he claimed wasn't born in the United States. Obama, of course, was born in Hawaii. His dad was Kenyan, though, and Trump kept bringing up the issue, even though Obama had released a short form of his birth certificate during the 2008 presidential campaign. That wasn't good enough for Trump, though, who claimed it could have been forged. Ultimately the drama led Obama to release a long-form birth certificate to the media.

The Correspondents' Dinner was less than a week later, and there, in a truly classy and hilarious moment, Obama made light of the matter:

What a week. As some of you heard the state of Hawaii released my official long-form birth certificate. Hopefully, this puts all doubts to rest. But just in case they're any lingering questions, tonight I'm prepared to go a step further. Tonight, for the first time, I am releasing my official birth video.

"Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba. Sithi uhm ingonyama," blared out of the speakers in the room. Obama played the scene from the beginning of The Lion King, when Simba is presented to the animal kingdom by Mufasa from on top of Pride Rock. The crowd went wild, but the joke wasn't over.

Oh, well. Back to square one. I want to make clear to the Fox News table that was a joke. That was not my real birth video. That was a children's cartoon. Call Disney if you don't believe me, they have the original long-form version.

Interestingly enough, Trump was actually at the dinner that year; you can see him in the audience. Obama saw him and called him out:

Now, I know that he's taken some flak lately but no one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than The Donald. And that's because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter, like, did we fake the moon landing? What really happened in Roswell? And where are Biggie and Tupac?

Reports say that Trump didn't take the joke well. Obama also joked about Trump's experience as the Celebrity Apprentice host. Perhaps Trump has been trying to prove himself ever since?
