The 2014 BAFTA Awards Fashion That Was Good, Bad, and Boring
In the weeks leading up to the 2014 Academy Awards, many of the biggest actors in the world of film are making their final decisions and fittings for gowns and shoes, hair, and makeup. But some of Hollywood’s brightest stars had to put those thoughts on hold on Sunday and focus instead on Britain’s biggest awards show of the year, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards. With appearances from celebrities like Lupita Nyong’o, Angelina Jolie, and even Oprah Winfrey, it was an exciting night for both film and fashion. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all good fashion, with some actresses missing the mark and others looking a little dull. Check out all of the night’s best, worst, and more boringly dressed.

BEST: Lupita Nyong'o
Can this rising star wear anything that looks less than stellar? Giving Jennifer Lawrence a run for her money in Christian Dior, Nyong’o looked positively radiant in her belted bright green gown, cuff bracelets, and colorful eyeshadow.
BORING: Cate Blanchett
Because she’s so fabulous, it’s easy to love the Blue Jasmine actress’s looks by default. But last night’s Alexander McQueen number — though fine by normal standards — was just a bit dull compared to the fascinating gowns we typically see her sporting.
BEST: Angelina Jolie
The only thing we love more than an Angelina Jolie red carpet appearance? When the powerhouse actress shows up donning an outfit no other lady would dare to wear at the BAFTAs, which she did with this perfectly undone Saint Laurent suit.
WORST: Maggie Gyllenhaal
There’s no denying that the pearl and jewel-studded Lanvin gown Gyllenhaal wore was a piece of art, but the boxy cut and sheer sleeves did nothing to show off the actress’s beautiful body.
BEST: Oprah Winfrey
Ruling the red carpet in a burgundy laser-cut Stella McCartney dress, The Butler actress and media queen looked like an absolute vision at the British awards show.
WORST: Lily Allen
Whether it was the mash-up of colors, crazy headpiece, too-heavy skirt, or sagging bust that ruined Allen’s Vivienne Westwood number, all we know is that it just didn’t work for the British singer.
BORING: Amy Adams
We’re sure she’s holding back so she can really stun us at the upcoming Oscars, but the American Hustle star’s sheer, collared Victoria Beckham number made her one of the most forgettable celebrities of the night.
BEST: Michelle Rodriguez
It looks like all that time hanging out with model-of-the-moment Cara Delevigne is really paying off, because Rodriguez showed up looking hotter than ever before in this deeply plunging, rich green Emilio de la Morena dress.
WORST: Gillian Anderson
She may have been sporting vintage Balmain, but the X-Files actress could have used a more flattering fit and chicer hairstyle — and perhaps an iron to get all those wrinkles out — to really do the dress justice.
BORING: Naomie Harris
With a face and body that gorgeous, it’s hard to understand why the British beauty would choose such a lackluster red Gucci gown to show it all off.
BEST: Hellen Mirren
The dame proved why she’s a lasting figure both on screen and on the red carpet with this embellished and sheer-paneled gown, complete with a voluminous ruffled skirt.
BORING: Uma Thurman
The timeless beauty may look elegant in her black Atelier Versace dress, but is it too much to ask for a colorful lip or more dramatic jewels?
