Sam Phillips Is Returning To ‘Gilmore Girls’

by Emily Lackey

If you love the music of Gilmore Girls as much as I do, then you’re going to be very excited to hear the news that I just got: Sam Phillips is returning to the Gilmore Girls revival. As much casting news has been taking over the airwaves of everything having to do with this revival since the four-episode Netflix series was announced in January, this one is a little different. Sam Phillips is part of the original Gilmore Girls team, but not in the way many of the original players are. Instead, Phillips’ influence has been felt a little more auditory, because, as the main songwriter for the series, her music can be heard in pretty much every single episode of the show. Really, the revival wouldn’t be the same without her.

The fact that Phillips is coming back for the Gilmore Girls revival is giving me all the feels about this sure-to-be-amazing reboot. No matter how many original cast members were announced to be returning over the past few months, nothing brought on as much instant nostalgia as this news that Phillips is writing music for the revival episodes. Especially since all of those la la’s that can be heard in every episode of Gilmore Girls are totally her.

Clearly this series would not be the same without all of those la la’s. More than anything visual, those sounds have such a strong nostalgic effect on me. They can pull me right back to 2000 when Gilmore Girls first premiered, and Phillips’ amazing vocals drifted out from my boxy television set. And, trust me, when you hear Phillips’ music, the same exact thing will happen to you.

But all of this makes me realize even more how much I love Amy Sherman-Palladino and am so glad she’s returned to make this reboot amazing. Where some creators and writers might try to go big or go home, it seems like Sherman-Palladino is determined to give fans the Stars Hollow and Gilmore Girls that they already fell in love with over 15 years ago.

With almost all of the original cast members returning to Stars Hollow, and now Phillips lending her amazing talent to the revival, it seems like these four episodes are going to be like stepping back in time. And I for one can’t wait to take that walk down memory lane.
