On Tuesday evening, Mary Pat Christie side-eyed Donald Trump during a rally and unknowingly became yet another source of drama within the Republican Party. The now-famous look came after Trump claimed women don't like Hillary Clinton. The GOP frontrunner had just won all five of the Republican Acela Tuesday primaries.
The only thing she's got going is the woman's card ... The beautiful thing is women don't like her, OK?
By the look of it, Mary Pat wasn't so sure. Apparently, a subtle expression can become an internet sensation overnight. Her husband's no stranger to that. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's dazed face was transformed into countless GIFs after he stared into space while Trump delivered a speech during a news conference in early March. But, if anything, this election season has taught us that anything's possible. And by "anything," I mean that Trump could be holding both Chris and Mary Pat hostage. For what it's worth, that's what the internet hypothesized before the governor crushed their theories.
The rumors became so popular that Christie had no choice but to respond. Less than 24 hours after the long stare, Christie made a statement to reporters in Trenton:
No, I wasn't being held hostage. No, I wasn't sitting up there thinking, 'Oh, my God, what have I done?'
Unfortunately for him, the nation isn't convinced now that his wife allegedly rolled her eyes at Trump and shot Chris a quick glance.
He didn't look entirely pleased, either.
Though this is perhaps the first time Mary Pat has gained such recognition, she has played a huge role in her husband's campaign for quite some time. For example, during his time as governor, Mary Pat has kept the family financially stable. For years, she worked as managing director at the investment firm Angelo, Gordon & Co. In 2016, however, she quit her job. Though she has not confirmed whether she quit to help her husband with his presidential campaign, she has definitely become highly involved. Prior to the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary, for example, Mary Pat filled in for her husband. While Chris was back in New Jersey following a huge snowstorm, she headed several meet-and-greets.
Since her side-eye, or eye-roll, or whatever it was, Mary Pat has gained some newfound supporters. Plenty of other Americans would agree that Trump's hyperbolic statements come just a little too often.
