Here's The One Tweet That Sums Up Cruz’s Campaign

by Emily Shire

On Tuesday night, after a stinging defeat in Indiana, a state where he devoted significant time (and hope) for a win, Ted Cruz dropped out of the Republican race for the presidential nomination. Although Republicans aboard the anti-Trump train who had pinned their party's presidential prospects on the Texas senator are likely wallowing at the news of Cruz's withdrawal, many others are taking a certain glee in seeing the infamously unlikable candidate quit. One of those is comedian Samantha Bee, who tweeted one of the most hysterical and biting jabs at Cruz — one that not only summed up his campaign but also took aim at his staunchly anti-choice views.

"Shouldn't #TedCruz have been forced to carry his unviable campaign to term?" the host of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee tweeted out, just hours after Cruz had dropped out of the running. Bee has a strong history as a proponent of reproductive rights. She has already devoted part of her late night show to shining a light on anti-choice state legislation and skewering the (generally) Republican politicians that back them. In March, Bee grilled Texas state Rep. Dan Flynn for his sponsorship of House Bill 2, the legislation that placed onerous restrictions on abortion clinics and is currently before the Supreme Court. "I speak with the authority of one who has a uterus, and I guess that’s why I think that you’re the wrongiest wrong-headedest wrong person," Bee told him when she called him out for his claim that the law is not meant to force abortion clinics to shutter but provide "safe health care for women."

Playing to her pro-choice advocacy, Bee couldn't help but take a swipe at Cruz's failed campaign and his anti-choice views in one fell swoop:

In April, Cruz appeared to reiterate his support for not allowing abortions, even in cases of rape, during an interview with Fox News' Megyn Kelly. The Texas senator also had Troy Newman, who once wrote the United States has a responsibility that "rightly involves executing convicted murderers, including abortionists, for their crimes," on his Pro-Lifers for Cruz coalition.
