Watch The Full 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Trailer

by Rachel Simon

Most superhero movies don't involve raccoons. Even less of them involve someone saying the world "a-hole" out loud. Yet in the just-released first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy , Marvel's newest adaptation, both those things are featured — and they're far from the craziest things about the Chris Pratt-starring film.

First of all, there's what I just said: Chris Pratt, of Parks and Rec fame, is starring in a superhero movie. Sure, thanks to the success of the Pratt-as-unlikely-hero The Lego Movie, that sentence may not be as surprising now as it was just a few weeks ago, but for those of us who know the actor best as the lovably dim Andy on Parks, it's still hard to digest. That doesn't mean we don't like it, though; judging from the trailer, Pratt's version of superhero is funny, self-aware, and, thanks to those abs, even a little bit sexy.

For the unaware, Guardians is based off the Marvel comic, in which a team of interstellar misfits, led by the Earth-born Jason Quill (Pratt), come together to protect the galaxy and evade a manhunt by the psychotic Ronan (Pushing Daisies' Lee Pace). It's an eclectic group; there's Quill, the immature, self-described "legendary outlaw;" Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a murderous soldier fleeing from her home; Drax (Dave Bautista), a beefed-up warrior in search of vengeance; Groot (Vin Diesel), a tree-like humanoid who absorbs words as food; and, of course, the raccoon, Rocket (Bradley Cooper), a marksman wanted for vehicular theft.

Unlike yesterday's teaser, the full trailer introduces us to all of those characters, plus John C. Reilly's military officer and a few others. Despite all the familiar faces, though, the best part of the trailer is its originality; with brand-new characters, a witty undertone, and an unlikely hero who has "public intoxication" on his rap sheet, Guardians might just become our new favorite superhero movie — sorry, Ben Affleck.

Guardians, directed by James Gunn (Thor: The Dark World), will be released on August 1. Check out the trailer below:
