The Pineapple Cutting Hack You've Been Waiting For

Confession: I've never cut — or peeled, or skinned, or whatever the correct verb is — a pineapple. I've eaten pineapple, sure; I've just never prepared it. But that is all going to change, ladies and gentlemen, with this hack for how to cut a pineapple. It's genius. And oddly calming to watch. Prepare to feel zen AF.

The video of an anonymous street vendor, posted on YouTube by Srinivasan Raghunathan, is actually a little old; it first hit the web in August of 2014. It's been going viral this week, though, due to the ease and skill with which the vendor prepares fresh pineapple chunks in, like, 30 seconds. Apparently it's normally very difficult cut fresh pineapple; makes sense, since they're kind of alien-like, with their prickly outside and their weird floofs of leaves on top. Had I not seen this video, I would probably have no idea where to even start. But oh ho ho, I have seen the video, and the game is changed.

According to the comments on YouTube, this hack not only takes practice, but a really sharp knife. So keep that in mind if you decide to try this out on your own. I mean, why would you not? Pineapple is awesome.

Here's the step by step process; scroll down to watch the full video to see it all in action at once. it's truly astonishing. You have been warned.

1. Chop The Ends Off

Er, I guess, "remove floofs" would be the first step, but all these pineapples appear to have been pre-defloofed. Second/first step, cut the ends off.

2. Cut Between The Skin And The Flesh Of The Pineapple

I'm sorry; that was the worst way to put that. Here is a better version: Using a sharp knife, cut around the perimeter of the fruit, as close to the skin as possible.

3. Cut the pineapple in a grid pattern

You know, for the chunks.

4. Repeat On The Other Side

And then... core it? To be honest, I can't offer more detail on that. It happens too fast! It looks too easy! I have no idea how he did that!

5. Sliiiide It Out

The first time that I saw this last part, I was still a little sleepy and for a split second thought the bag (which, in my defense, is the same color yellow as the inside of a pineapple) was somehow like a weird flabby part of the pineapple? Man, I don't know. It was upsetting.

But the end result is pretty cool. Watch the full video here:
