Selena Gomez’s “Feel Me” Is Perfect For Breakups

by Emily Lackey

If you ask me, there’s nothing in the world like a good breakup ballad. So thank goodness for Selena Gomez’s new song “Feel Me.” This song is the breakup song we all need, because the lyrics to Selena Gomez’s “Feel Me” are the perfect lines to sing at the top of your lungs whether it’s been days or weeks since you got over your ex. Because breakups suck, y’all. The constantly fluctuating emotions are hard to handle on a good day, but, when your heart is breaking, you need reinforcements STAT. And that is exactly what “Feel Me” is all about: The complicated process of getting over someone and moving on.

Getting over an ex is definitely not a straight line to acceptance. There’s always some back and forth. There are feelings of regret and anger. There are feelings of loneliness and longing for what once was. And “Feel Me” captures all of those complicated breakup emotions perfectly.

Just look at some of these lyrics. They are the perfect ones to sing whenever you’re feeling those old feelings stirring again. They embody the various stages of a breakup, especially that tricky phase when you’re feeling like what you had in the past was special, something that no one has had before.

Selena Gomez sings:

No one love you like I love you I never cheated, never lied I never put no one above you I gave you space and time And now you're telling me you miss me And I'm still on your mind We were one in a million Our love is hard to find

Do you stay up late just so you don't dream?

Preach, sister. Anyone who has been in love before has felt those feelings. But those aren’t the only feelings that come with a breakup. There’s also the inevitable hoping that you’re constantly on the other person’s mind. So when “Feel Me” launches into its chorus, you’re ready to belt this out with every ounce of energy you have:

Every time your lips touch another I want you to feel me, I want you to feel me Every time you dance with somebody I want you to feel me, I want you to feel me Do your days get a little bit lonely? Nights get a little bit colder? Heartbeat a little bit louder? Days get a little bit longer? Nights get a little bit colder? Heartbeat a little bit louder?

And, of course, like the seven stages of grief, the three stages of a breakup require the perfect mood and music to help you cope. And thankfully “Feel Me” deals with all three of these break up emotions in one song, including the final one: Acceptance. In the final verse, Gomez finds her own strength and realizes she’s better off without her ex:

When you're running, who you run to? Where do you go to hide? When she ain't giving you enough to get you through the night I won't be caught up in the middle Through your highs and your lows Baby, 'long as you're not with me, you'll always be alone.

If this isn’t the perfect song to get you through even the toughest break ups, I really don’t know what is.
