Blake & Gwen's New Song Is Gorgeously Sad

by Allie Gemmill

To say that Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are one of the most interesting couples in Hollywood right now is an understatement. They're both excellent musicians, but they're the quintessential example of "opposites attracting." He's a little bit country, she's a little bit rock n' roll, and, together, they're all fun and games. Or are they? Lately, there's been enough news to keep the rumor mill on Shelton and Stefani's relationship going for quite some time. Capitalizing on whether they are actually burning hot or fizzling out, Shelton and Stefani's "Go Ahead And Break My Heart" duet (from his upcoming album If I'm Honest) is available on iTunes. And, brace yourselves, because this song is going to get tongues wagging.

"Go Ahead and Break My Heart" is a typically country-pop-styled song. Dare I say it's incredibly catchy and summer playlist-worthy? But why choose such an ominous song title if the music itself is actually pretty bouncy? For that matter, what are the actual lyrics telling us about their current relationship status? Are they hinting at a possible break-up between Shelton and Stefani? Are they referring to their respective exes, Miranda Lambert and Gavin Rossdale? Or are they simply celebrating their relationship and using this misleading song title to earn listeners?

Looking at the lyrics, I'm inclined to think "Go Ahead and Break My Heart" answers that last question perfectly. In Shelton's opening verse, he sings about being on the edge of breaking up with his current flame. He's feeling used, but he likes being with her and is ready to see her when she calls him:

Just when I'm about to lose my mind

There you are getting on my phone

The moon is rising and you're all alone

Maybe we could just hang a while

Maybe we can make each other smile

This is echoed in the chorus, which cracks open the floodgates. Singing the merits of being wildly and lustfully in love, Shelton and Stefani belt out,

Why don't you go ahead and break my heart?

Why are you waiting? Is it way too hard?

If moving on is what you wanna do

Why don't you do it, baby? Why don't you do it, baby?

You can't tell me that we'll still be friends

And maybe one day we can try is again

If you really need a brand new start

Why don't you go ahead and break my heart?

And so, it sounds like they pair are talking about the beginning of their relationship. Both were coming out of long marriages, marriages that had appeared to the public to be strong and solid. From these lyrics, we see they're questioning the longevity of their current relationship. They are coming from very emotionally fragile places, looking for something real to hold on to, but they're still a bit jaded about whether it's worth it to get into another real romance so soon. All this fragility is wrapped up in a tough exterior, making this song a nice window into Shelton and Stefani's relationship.

"Go Ahead and Break My Heart" may get tongues wagging, but it's just a darn good song too. Whether Shelton and Stefani are makin' up or breakin' up, if this is how it sounds, I'll be clicking replay all summer long.
