Drake Just Reached A Major Milestone

by Jordana Lipsitz

Congratulations are due to Drizzy, Aubrey, Jimmy from Degrassi — however you see the hip hop sensation, he's done something big. On Monday, it was announced that Canadian rapper Drake had gotten his first No. 1 song, having made it to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 with his collaboration with WizKid and Kyla, "One Dance." He's come close to reaching that spot before, with "Hotline Bling" making it to No. 2, and Rihanna collaborations “Work” and “What’s My Name?" hitting No. 1. But this is the first time that Drake has made No.1 for a song on which he was the main artist. Good job, Drizzy — we all knew you had it in you.

Drake earning his first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 is certainly impressive, but it's just one of the rapper's many major achievements. Taking a step back from this victory, everyone's favorite champagne-popper (or Champagne papi, as his Instagram handle calls him) has made quite a few accomplishments in his extensive career — he may have "started from the bottom," but he has found himself on the top for quite some time now. I, for one, am pretty certain that he'll be staying there for a long, long time. Here's a look back at some of his most impressive achievements.

1. His First Two Singles Made It To The Top 10 Of The Billboard 100 Chart

On July 4, 2009, "Best I Ever Had" and "Every Girl" entered the top 10 at positions three and 10, respectively.

2. His Mixtape, So Far Gone, Won Rap Recording of the Year At The 2010 Juno Awards

For a mixtape that was produced by Drake's own label, October's Very Own, when he was just starting out, that's pretty darn impressive.

3. Two Of His Albums Hit No. 1 On The Billboard 200

Thank Me Later hit No. 1 in 2010 and then What A Time To Be Alive did the same in 2015. All I have to say is "fire." Fire, ladies and gentlemen. Fire.

4. In 2016, He Became A Member Of The Forbes 5

Forbes added Drake to its ranking of the wealthiest hip-hop artists that year, alongside Diddy, Dr. Dre, Jay Z, and Birdman.

5. He Was Given The Key To Toronto

On February 12, 2016 at the NBA All-Stars game in Toronto, Mayor John Tory presented Drake with the key to the city. Drake has numerous accolades, but according to NME, he called this particular award "one of the greatest moments of my life, if not the greatest."

6. He Created "YOLO" — Well, Maybe

Drake is credited with inventing one of the greatest life mottos since hakuna matata, in his song "Motto." There's some controversy about whether or not he actually invented it which Vanity Fair covers perfectly in a 2013 article about YOLO's origins, but let's just say that he "popularized" the word.

7. Awards, Awards, Awards

The 2010 Juno Awards were special because it marked Drake's first award, but since then, he has won a Grammy, three Juno Awards, and five BET awards.

In the six years since Drake seriously entered America's pop culture landscape, he has been winning acclaim left and right. I can't wait to see what he does next.
