Another Health Setback for Hospitalized Randy Travis

by Kate Ward

Randy Travis' health troubles continue. After the country singer was admitted Sunday to a Texas hospital with viral cardiomyopathy — the weakening of the heart caused by infection — Travis has suffered a stroke. According to a rep for Travis, the musician underwent surgery Wednesday following his health setback.

Said a rep in a statement: "As a complication of his congestive heart failure, Mr. Randy Travis has suffered a stroke and is currently undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. He is in critical condition. We will have updates as they become available. His family and friends here with him at the hospital request your prayers and support."

Though Travis' condition seemed to be improving, the singer's family is pointing to history as a cause for concern. Said Travis' sister-in-law, Teresa Traywick, Tuesday, "We have been told he has had surgery. Our prayers are going out to him because my husband just had a heart attack last year, so it is in their family. Their mother passed away at an early age with her heart, so it is like these boys are following right in their footsteps. My prayers are with them. That's all I can say right now."

This is the latest in a string of troubles for Travis — the singer was arrested twice in 2012 for public intoxication and driving while intoxicated. He was also hospitalized the same year after getting into a fight in front of a church in Plano, Texas.
