Meghan Trainor's 'Thank You' Is Empowering

by Amy Roberts

Since the 2014 breakthrough release of her insanely catchy hit "All About That Bass," Meghan Trainer has regularly split public opinion on whether her music and persona is feminist or even, empowering (is body-positivity still empowering when you're celebrating full figures but shaming smaller, "treble" ones?). Though Trainor may have once been hesistant to call herself a feminist, she's recently reasserted her position, telling UK newspaper, The Sun: "Obviously I am a feminist. My songs are women’s anthems across the board," Amen to that, and the proof can be found in her latest album; Trainor's Thank You is full of feminist lyrics.

Brimming with positivity, confidence and the swagger of a woman asserting ownership over her own space in the world, Thank You is packed full of songs in tribute to loving yourself, acceptance, independence, and love and support for other women. These are songs which reject the idea of requiring male validation and which also fight back against ideas of male entitlement. At their core, Trainor's lyrics are self-celebratory mantras, saluting all forms of beauty and encouraging that women feel entitled to adoring themselves.

Here for your empowering pleasure are 21 essential mantras from Trainor's most feminist lyrics on Thank You; be sure to scrawl the best one on your mirror in lipstick later, huh?
