Here Are The Best Cities For Jobs In 2016

by Kaitlyn Wylde

Whenever I spend time talking to someone who lives in another city, I leave the conversation with plans to move to their city. I'm so easily enticed by change that when Glassdoor released a list of the best cities for jobs in 2016, I immediately texted my friends to tell them that I'm moving, somewhere. Spoiler alert: New York didn't make the cut. Maybe not-so-surprisingly, the city I call home is not one of the best places to work, according to statistics pertaining to income, cost of living, work-life balance and opportunity.

It can sometimes feel difficult to pinpoint the source of dissatisfaction. Would you be happier and more fulfilled if you had the same job, in a different city? Are you in the right city with the wrong job? Are you meant to be in a city at all? There are so many different ways people our age can chose to live their lives, it's hard to know which is the right choice, without giving a few a try. Alas, taste-testing the nation's cities is not a viable option for everyone.

If you're thinking about a move, haven't yet settled down, or don't know where the good life is, check out these 10 cities that statistics say have the best jobs, this year:

10. Oklahoma City, OK

Year after year, Oklahoma City is named the best place to live, the most stable place to have a family, and the best place for business. They also own the largest inventory of banjos, in case you're a collector ...

9. Minneapolis-St.Paul, MN

The nation's third most literate city, and the city responsible for the existence of the honeycrisp apple, the twin cities also have some of the best park systems in the country.

8. Raleigh-Durham, NC

This city is known both for its artistic and technological communities. The founding fathers called it "The City of Oak" because of the major population of oak trees, still found today.

7. Salt Lake City, UT

Home of the first KFC and some of the freshest, most ski-able power in the world, 3.4 out of five residents are happy with their jobs in the salty city.

6. Austin, TX

On average, the sun shines 300 days out of the year in Austin, so it's no wonder the people are so happy with their lives. It also has an extraordinary amount of bats living in the city — bats that apparently missed the memo about the weather.

5. Washington, DC

If the capital city is good enough for all the presidents, it's good enough for me. Not to mention, the median base salary is $70,000 — not too shabby.

4. Boston, MA

This city is rich with historical culture, landmarks, and traditions. There's tons of public transportation, which makes its spread-out design easy to navigate. Plus, there are over 120,000 jobs available right now.

3. Seattle, WA

Seattle is both the home of Starbucks and one of the largest dog populations in the nation. More people have dogs than they do children here — did someone say heaven? No wonder everyone's so satisfied with their lives here.

2. San Francisco, CA

With a huge concentration of high-tech jobs and an impressively large median income, San Fran residents are pretty comfortable. It doesn't hurt that the city is gorgeous and environmentally diverse, too.

1. San Jose, CA

Four out five people are happy with their jobs, their lives and their homes in San Jose, CA. It's one of the top three safest cities in the US and it's one of the most educated cities in the world. Life is apparently pretty good in San Jose. Yes way, Jose.
