This Is Why Scarlet Witch Isn't In 'Apocalypse'

After stunning fans with a brief appearance in X-Men: Days of Future Past, Quicksilver is back for more Marvel fun in X-Men: Apocalypse. In Apocalypse, Quicksilver teams up with the X-Men and as he becomes a bigger part of the X-Men universe, fans can't help but wonder, where is his sister? Anybody who paid attention to the media before Days of Future Past was released knows that the original Quicksilver has a twin sister, Wanda, aka Scarlet Witch. And, if you're a fan of Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe, you know that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are actually a pretty awesome, super-powered duo. So, with Quicksilver's increasing role in X-Men, why isn't Wanda in X-Men: Apocalypse ?

Small spoilers ahead! Wanda's absence in Apocalypse is particularly noticeable due to the fact that one of Quicksilver's main character points in the film is his desire to have a relationship with his father. In Days of Future Past, it was hinted that Magneto is Quicksilver's father, though he doesn't quite know it yet. (This is true in the comics.) X-Men producer Simon Kinberg has since revealed that there was a line hinting at Wanda that was left on the cutting room floor. "We talked about bringing Scarlet Witch into the mix for this film, and there was actually a little scene we shot that we ended up cutting from the movie that alluded to her," Kinberg said in an interview with Total Film.

In Apocalypse, Quicksilver makes a few attempts at trying to meet his father again and tell him who he is. Now, one might think that before going off to find your long lost father, you might consult your twin. But, Quicksilver does no such thing, despite the fact that he still lives with his mother. In fact, his sister is never even mentioned, which begs the question: does Wanda even exist in the X-Men universe?

X-Men director Bryan Singer hasn't really explained why Scarlet Witch isn't in Apocalypse, but it's pretty much accepted by audiences that the reason she's not in the X-Men movies is because of her growing role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (Though why there could be two Quicksilvers and not two Scarlet Witches is beyond me.) Perhaps a deal was struck between 20th Century Fox (home of the X-Men franchise) and Marvel/Disney that decided that the X-Men could have Quicksilver if the Avengers got to keep Scarlet Witch? It would help explain why Marvel (spoiler) killed off Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and why Scarlet Witch hasn't even been mentioned in the X-Men films.

Of course, should the X-Men franchise continue with Quicksilver and Magneto, there's always the possibility that Scarlet Witch/Wanda could join them in future films. In the meantime, I guess we'll just have to make due with the one Scarlet Witch we do have.
