19 Celebs Who Are Channeling The '90s

by Michelle McGahan

You know what they say: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And imitation of '90s fashion and culture, well, you just can't get any more sincere in your flattery than that. Since fashion trends exist in cycles (there's a reason we were all walking around with '60s-inspired smiley face stickers, peace signs, and an ass-load of tie-dye in the '90s), it was only a matter of time until '90s fashion was once again killin' it, center stage. Thanks in part to celebrities who are currently channeling the '90s — and all of us twenty-somethings high on the nostalgia of our youth — the sights, sounds, and looks of the '90s are making a serious comeback. And guys: I'm kind of all about it.

Maybe it's because it feels like I've gone back in time, maybe because it makes me feel like a kid again, or maybe because it's a universal thread (literally), that somehow links all walks off life who grew up on Rugrats and Spice Girls. It doesn't matter if you're a glossy celeb on the red carpet, an Instagram model who frequently does those enviable lip swatches, or just a regular ol' Joe walking down the street:'90s fashion connects us all — and reminds us of the good ol' days of carefree innocence, Bonnebell Lip Smackers, and butterfly clips.

Check out 19 celebs below who are channeling the '90s in their every day lives.

1. Taylor Swift

T. Swift's choker and spaghetti-strap velour dress (hmm, there are some words I haven't used in a solid decade) were an homage to the decade of Swift's childhood.

2. Kylie Jenner

The taupe matte lips and baggy jean jacket are #throwback enough, but Jenner single-handedly brought back the Von Dutch hat – an early 2000s staple — thanks to her Instagram and Snapchat selfies.

3. Justin Bieber

The Biebs was full-on '90s in this Wayne Gretzky Rangers jersey and grunge-y dreads.

4. One Direction

It's not even so much the style, but 1D brought the '90s back on a whole other level, ushering in a new generation of boy bands.

5. Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian channeled the '90s so hard with her couch fabric-inspired dress at the 2013 Met Gala that Robin Williams even tweeted the Mrs. Doubtfire comparison.

6. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus' entire Instagram aesthetic is basically the inside of a '90s kid's sticker book.

7. Rihanna

Rihanna doesn't just look like a '90s icon here (I definitely see Aaliyah), but everything from those round sunglasses, short bob haircut to that loose-fitting jacket and shirt are '90s-esque, for sure.

8. Kendall Jenner

Yes, this is a throwback of epic proportions, but nothing says '90s quite like young Jenner sisters in matching Adidas tracksuits and bowl haircuts. I can almost feel the swishy fabric now.

9. Katy Perry & Riff Raff

Katy Perry and Riff Raff were technically channeling 2001 here — Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake at the 2001 American Music Awards, to be exact — but all that denim, those matching outfits, and just the whole ~Britney/Justin~ of it all is totally leftover '90s nostalgia.

10. Perrie Edwards

When it comes to Little Mix, the Spice Girls comparisons are inevitable. But Perrie Edwards has been serving some legit Emma Bunton realness on Instagram lately, particularly with the platinum blonde pigtails and baby blue eyeshadow.

11. Britney Spears

Britney Spears' sparkly blue cutout dress at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards screams '90s fashion. Like, she could've worn this in her Baby One More Time era and I wouldn't have batted an eye.

12. Selena Gomez

#TBT to the time that Selena Gomez wore overalls over a bikini top and basically embodied all of '90s California fashion in a single outfit.

13. Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid in that belly shirt and cutoff jean shorts? So '90s. This whole picture, in fact, could've easily been taken in 1997.

14. Willow Smith

Willow Smith wasn't even alive in the '90s (she was born in 2000 — let that one sink in), but that classic black choker is here to remind us of life in a simpler time. That choker is straight vintage, and I'm pretty sure I (along with every other pre-teen girl in the '90s) had the exact same one.

15. Hailey Baldwin

This picture is so filled with a mess of '90s fashion I'm not even sure where to begin: There's the cutoff jean shorts, the plaid, the baggy sweatshirt, the handkerchief, the headband.

16. Austin Mahone

Austin Mahone is all about that backwards hat life, and combined with that bright purple shirt, he could've probably been an extra in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air somewhere.

17. Fifth Harmony

5H were giving off major Destiny's Child vibes in their iridescent pink bodysuits at the 2016 BBMAs.

18. Lucy Hale

Though not quite of the bucket variety, Lucy Hale's hat in this photo is still something straight out of a 1992 Laura Ashley catalogue.

19. Ariana Grande

Everyone else can just stop right now, because we've reached peak '90s. And it is straight in the form of Ariana Grande's '90s Nickelodeon-inspired clutch, which features Nicktoons like Chuckie Finster and Oblina from Ahh! Real Monsters.

I can only wait to see what kind of early '00s looks we'll unearth in another 10 years or so. Frosted tips? JNCO wide-flare jeans? The red carpet isn't ready...
