How To Style Your Hair At The Beach

On the hottest of summer days, it feels like the minute you step outside, no matter what you do to style hair, it turns into a frizzy, sweaty mess. Never mind trying to figure out how to style your hair at the beach or a pool party — that's totally out of the question! No amount of gel, spray, or mousse can hold up for more than a few minutes when your strands hit that humidity. Besides, who wants to bother with a curling or straightening iron when it's a zillion degrees outside, especially when all of your hard work will inevitably fall apart in a matter of seconds.

Because of this, figuring out what to do with your hair for a summer event — like a pool party or a beach wedding — can be tricky. You want something that will stay in tact and keep you cool, but also doesn't take a lot of time to do, because who wants to be spending precious minutes primping when they could be outside catching rays or drinking rosé?

I spoke to celebrity hair stylist, Nick Arrojo, who is world-renowned for his products and styling tricks, about what quick, easy summer hairstyles he recommends for a girl on-the-go when it's super, super hot out there. Take a look at a step-by-step guide of how to get three simple styles that are sure to look chic all day long, even in the most brutal July heat.

1. Beachy Waves

Nothing quite says "summer vibes" like a head of gorgeous, carefree beach waves. And accordion to Arrojo, even straight-haired girls can get the look! Begin by misting wet hair with hydro mist and protective thickening lotion. Part hair in four sections, from forehead to nape and ear to ear, and twist each section into large, tight coil. Allow to dry naturally, re-twisting if/as needed, then, when dry, shake out with your fingers. Add refinish dry shampoo if you want to amp up the texture and volume.

2. Headband Braid

This quick, easy style is a great way to keep strands out of your face and add a boho vibe to your look. Begin by sectioning a small strip of hair from the right temple. Divide the section into thirds and braid them loosely, holding the hair across the top of your forehead at the hairline, adding hair to the back side of the plait. Continue braiding to the opposite temple, then pin the ends just above the ear, allowing hair from the top to cover the edge of the braid.

3. Flirty Pony

This fun, flirty look is a great way to keep your hair off your neck when it gets super, super hot this summer. Begin by spraying hair liberally with refinish dry shampoo. Shake your roots with your fingers to create a tousled texture, then gather hair loosely, high at the back of the head (on or above the occipital bone will keep it high and dramatic and flirty). Secure the pony with a cloth hair band, or add a bow for a preppy pop of color. Mist the strands in the ponytail with protective thickening lotion to add volume. For loose curls and soft movement, and wrap random sections around a curling wand.
