Why Did Gigi & Zayn Break Up?

by Courtney Lindley

What is this, the summer of 2004?! (Shout out to all the middle schoolers at Jackson Middle who know what I'm talking about.) First, Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris decided to end things, and now during our fragile state of affairs, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik have broken up. According to E! News, the model and singer have officially called it quits after dating for seven months (and participating in a magical Vogue photoshoot together like two actual earth angels.) But why? Why did this happen to me? Oops, sorry I mean, them. Why did Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik break up? Everything seemed to be going so well, you know? I just feel like this is so unfair for me. Them! I mean them.

E! News reports that at this point there's no clear reason for the breakup, so I'm going to go out on a limb and let you know that this might continue to be the case. In all likelihood, we'll probably never know what really happened between Malik and Hadid — because we weren't there.

One thing to keep in mind Hadid and Malik's age (21 and 23 respectively). That's pretty young to have a serious, long-term, committed relationship. Then add in the fact that they are both presumably at the height of their careers, and that so much attention is on the both of them both as individuals and as a couple. Being that young, that busy, and that much in the public eye sounds like a whole lot of pressure. It wouldn't be crazy to assume that it was just too much right now.

I'm sure as the story continues to develop, rumors will arise, and people will take sides and play favorites, and all of the usual things that go on after an adored celebrity couple breaks up. Let's just not forget that the reason Hadid and Malik broke up could have something to do with falling out of love, or realizing they weren't a good match, or any other of the infinite reasons that people break up with each other. These things happen.

So regardless of what big news stories break that try to dissect what exactly happened, the best thing to do is understand that we'll probably never know — and to wish them the best anyway.
