Peggy Has Some Feelings About Cap's Love Life

by Michelle Lulic

After Steve Rogers was frozen and reawakened in the present day, his relationship with original flame Peggy Carter was (reasonably) brought to a halt. However, despite his inability to be with Peggy, he stayed by her side until she passed away — and then he immediately moved on. His latest love interest is Peggy's own grandniece, Sharon Carter — and the actress behind Agent Carter, Hayley Atwell, has an opinion on Captain America's new love interest. You know, a negative one. Steve and Sharon aka Agent 13 may be a longstanding couple in the comics, but, after seeing Captain America: Civil War, there's just some facts that can't be ignored.

“Well, first of all she’d [Peggy Carter] be turning over in her grave. She’d be like ‘no.’ And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]," Atwell joked about her character's reaction in an interview with IGN. "She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s ass as well." But that's not all. Atwell echoed the sentiments of many fans who saw the movie, continuing, “I just feel that, you know — I wouldn’t want to date my great aunt’s guy. It just feels like it crosses an incestuous boundary. And Peggy just died. That’s even more disrespectful, right? It’s like, ‘don’t touch that. You can’t tap that!'”

But Atwell's disapproval isn't just rooted in what Peggy would think of all this. She also questions whether or not Steve would be good enough for Sharon in the wake of the controversial reveal that Steve is a secret Hydra agent and has been all this time in the comics. “She’d [Peggy] want the best for her [Sharon] and she’d want her dating a good guy. And now with this whole ‘Hail Hydra' business, I don’t know if Steve’s good enough for her. So on all levels, it’s just a big fat no.” This twist has yet to make it into the movies itself — if it ever will — but it's clear that Atwell-slash-Peggy isn't going to stand for a member of her family romancing a Hydra agent. And she damn well shouldn't.

You know, if she were alive to not stand for it. Then again, it's the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anything is possible. Peggy Carter may be able to return and put both of them in their place, and that would be one hilarious encounter between those three. Of course, the most hilarious part of it all is that Atwell embodies Peggy so thoroughly that her joking words can be taken as law by the fans. Steve and Sharon are a beloved couple in the comics, and Sharon herself is badass and will hopefully get more chances to prove that in the films, but it's great to see the movie's stars willing to find the humor in the situation of Steve's sometimes questionable love life.
