Obama Says He'll Veto Farm Bill Without Food Stamps

by Katherine Johnson

In an effort to push through the Farm Bill, which passed today by a vote of 216 to 208, House Republicans removed measures dealing with food stamps, and are putting off dealing with that whole issue until..who knows when. Still, this version of the bill could be met with a veto by President Obama.

The revised bill, which was only released last night to decrease opposition, deals strictly with farm programs. The food stamp debate will be dealt with separately.

Obama has threatened to veto the bill because it doesn't deal with food stamps. "The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a cornerstone of our nation's food assistance safety net, and should not be left behind as the rest of the Farm Bill advances," a statement released by the White House Wednesday stated.

The original bill was defeated last month, after Republicans didn't believe enough cuts were made to the food stamp program.
