This Guy's Impressions Of '90s Cartoons Are Perf

by Lily Feinn

The ‘90s are back and like Whoopi Goldberg in that scene from Ghost, they are speaking through a man named Brock Baker. This guy does impressions of '90s cartoon characters that are so spot-on, they may bring a little tear of nostalgia to your eye. The YouTube creator and master impressionist (who dubs himself "The Man of a Kajillion Voices") has harnessed the power of Nickelodeon and is bent on making you relive your childhood. The video shows off his impressively wide range of 23 impressions from classic ‘90s cartoons edited into four minutes of joy. Debuting today, the video has already racked up an impressive 300,000 views and counting — and I’m betting most of those are from Millennials.

Like any good '90s kid, TV was a pivotal part of my life. The rare times that I was not happily parked in front of the screen I was scheming how to find a way to watch even more cartoons. Nickelodeon was the silver lining to every sick day and snow storm. The cartoons that premiered in that remarkable decade were strange, wacky, over-the-top and a bit rude. We all knew, even though we were just kids, that something special was happening in the world of animation.

A diverse group of characters shared that network's screen. There was the fantastically gross odd-couple Ren and Stimpy, the endearing unrequited love of Doug Funny, and groups of friend that played everywhere from the sandbox to the streets of Brooklyn. Brock nails the voices of your favorite characters (and if he has left one out, he takes requests) and they are definitely worth a listen. Here are a few of my personal faves:

Rocko And Mrs. Bighead

The Colorado-native nails the voice of the titular Aussie wallaby, and Brock's sense of humor gels particularly well with this fairly perverted cartoon. Bev Bighead, Rocko's raspy-voiced next door neighbor, is sadly the only female impression that Brock attempts in the video. This glimmer makes us long for a Helga Pataki or Angelica. Maybe there's even hope for a Daria impression in the future?

Ren And Stimpy

While Brock mentions that his parents didn't allow him to watch Ren and Stimpy growing up he certainly captures the deranged Chihuahua and dim-witted cat quite well. While this show premiered at the very beginning of the '90s alongside Doug and Rugrats, it had the most dark-humor and adult jokes of all Nick's cartoon offerings. But careful, as it is just as addictive now as it was then and you may find yourself rewatching all five seasons if you are not careful.

Spongebob Squarepants

While we don't think of Spongebob as part of the cartoon canon, since it premiered in May of 1999, it does technically count as a '90s cartoon. Its zaniness and unique humor certainly carried the torch of the '90s through the early 2000s, and we are forever grateful. Brock has nailed the oh so annoying Spongebob laugh, and his Mr. Crabs and Patrick aren't bad either.
