Why JoJo Is The Best 'Bachelorette' Ever

by Olivia Caridi

After the premiere of her season, I wrote an article for Bustle explaining why I know JoJo will find love on The Bachelorette. I pointed out that she has a direct, practical, no-nonsense personality that will see through the glitz and glam that comes with reality show dating. And, after this week's two-episode, four-hour Chadvaganza, America got to see just what I was talking about. JoJo is telling it like it is, taking her journey to find love seriously, and absolutely slaying her role as the lead. In fact, JoJo is the best Bachelorette in history, if you ask me.

During Monday's episode, viewers were treated to an intense two hours with a group date involving some sexual standup comedy and a very threatening Chad. After Evan used his time on stage to make some jokes Chad seemed to take offense at, there was an apparent altercation between the two contestants. JoJo knew something went down between Chad and Evan, and the minute she could get to the bottom of it, she did. At the cocktail party, she asked Evan what happened, who told one story, and then she asked Chad the same thing, and he told an entirely different story. Evan even resorted to issuing an ultimatum, saying if Chad stayed, he would go. Gutsy move, my man.

Then came the moment I realized JoJo is, in my opinion, the best Bachelorette the show has seen. She validated Evan by giving him a rose, but she directly explained that she cannot get rid of Chad, because she hasn't gotten to the bottom of his personality yet. She showed one contestant she appreciated his time, and then also put in the effort to communicate her decisions and be open about her process to find love. I mean, how cool is that?

Well, it wasn't very cool when Evan sat down with the rose and Chad said in front of all the guys and JoJo, "Is this real? ... You're actually vibing this dude?" But, JoJo didn't accept Chad's words quietly. "Yeah, and I don't appreciate what you're doing," she said. "Don't be disrespectful, I don't like that. You are being disrespectful and I don't like this side of you." I mean, HALLELUJAH! There are some guys that seem to be intimidated by "Chad Bear," but JoJo and her no-nonsense personality have no problem telling it like it is. If that doesn't make her the best Bachelorette ever, I don't know what does.

Then, on Tuesday night's episode, during the dramatic two-on-one date, JoJo heard from Alex about the conflict with Chad and the guys in the house, and it was another moment where she completely blew me away. And, though she acknowledged that he needed to go, she didn't make the decision carelessly. She cried for Chad, remembering that his mother recently passed and that he might be going through a hard time. It reminds me of the time I was sent home on the two-on-one (and "left" on that island) and my bags were taken from the house in the Bahamas. The first thing JoJo said was, "I can't imagine how Olivia is feeling right now."

JoJo really cares about people and she cares about her relationships with each of the men. She's not going to make rash decisions, and she wants to take take everything into consideration. During her one-on-one time with Chad on the date, we saw her practical nature. When the two started talking about the confrontations in the house, she could feel herself getting heated, so she stepped away and said, "I don't want to make a decision when I'm emotional." Talk about keeping your cool in a high-intensity situation!

After the season premiere a few weeks ago, I wrote in the aforementioned Bustle article, "[JoJo] will be bold, courageous, and fearless, and she won't be afraid to stand up to anyone. She will be practical, and she won't sugarcoat things. She won't get lost in the glitz and glam, and she'll be direct with people throughout the process." This is what I'm talking about when I say she has a no-nonsense personality.

During her private time with Chad during the two-on-one date, she also addressed his threatening behavior. Chad didn't deny that he intimidated guys in the house, and he didn't apologize for it. Regardless of whether he felt guilty or not for his actions, JoJo still voiced her opinion, saying, "That's not the way to handle it," before suggesting how Chad should have dealt with it: "Sitting down and having a conversation like an adult."

Did her comments make him feel differently about his actions? Probably not. But she still chose to be direct, and did so even when she said goodbye to Chad, saying, "I don't think you're the person you say you are ... I don't want someone who threatens other people, who can't get along with other people."

That's how a great Bachelorette handles conflict. She gets to the bottom of the problem, asks both parties for a rundown of the issue, finds out exactly what's going on, sticks to her convictions, and is positive and clear in her decisions. Have we ever seen someone in the lead role be so forthcoming with her opinions and beliefs? Or seen someone handle tension and stress with such grace and maturity? JoJo seems to be in a league of her own Bachelorette-wise, and I can't wait to watch her continue to slay each week.
