Sansa's Letter From 'Game Of Thrones,' Decoded

by Caroline Gerdes

A picture is worth a thousand words. Though, sometimes a picture is worth about 50 words that can spoil a Game Of Thrones storyline. Spoilers Ahead, of course. When Sansa wrote a letter during Game of Thrones last Sunday, fans could only guess who she was writing to. But, many were looking at Littlefinger. And, one Redditor has confirmed our suspicion and decoded the message from screengrabs. So, who was Sansa’s letter to?

According to Mashable, Reddit user CreepyPancakes used Photoshop to decipher what Sansa’s letter said, and for whom it was written. The letter is seemingly to Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish and seems to say, “You promised to protect me … Now you have a chance to fulfill your promise … Knights of the Vale are under your command. Ride north for Winterfell. Lend us your aid and I shall see to it that you are … rewarded.”

If this is true, once again, Sansa surprises fans with her newfound bravery and confidence. She is no longer a naïve child with a crush on Joffrey Baratheon. She has grown up, and quickly — no thanks to Petyr Baelish. And, Sansa has already confronted Littlefinger once this season about how he married her off to Ramsay Bolton. In a powerful scene, Sansa told Littlefinger about her harrowing experience and escape from Ramsay.

Sansa didn’t hold back when telling a man who holds some responsibility for her attack about her experience. "Ladies aren't supposed to talk about these things," she says about her abuse, expressing the shame many survivors feel. She even told Littlefinger about the lingering physical and emotional feelings she has following her rape. Sansa didn't stay silent about her experience to make Littlefinger more comfortable. She tells him what happened to her in detail.

Did you know about Ramsay? If you didn’t know you’re an idiot, if you did know you’re my enemy … Would you like to hear about our wedding night? He never hurt my face — he needed my face, the face of Ned Stark’s daughter. But the rest of me, he did what he liked with the rest of me, as long as I could still give him an heir … You said you would protect me … I don’t believe you anymore, I don’t need you anymore. You can’t protect me.

Sansa then dismissed Littlefinger which resulted in a lie to Jon Snow about how she had recently communicated with Littlefinger, which made me a little uneasy and unsure of how this lie could come back to haunt her. However, out of duty for House Stark, it seems Sansa is calling on Littlefinger, almost to see what kind of man he really is. Does he really want to protect her? Is he a man of his word? Will he actually rise to the occasion to protect her or help her family?

So, will Littlefinger answer Sansa’s letter with support of the Knights of the Vale? Some fans believe that he likely will follow through on his promise, though his motives are just as iffy as ever. Littlefinger has an unhealthy obsession with Sansa and he cares mostly about his own interests. Littlefinger’s arrival will certainly mean new challenges, as well as a potentially stronger Stark army. But, no matter what his motives are, at least we can take comfort in knowing that Sansa is as strong as ever and knows exactly what she's doing.
