Isabel Marant is Over the Sneaker Wedge

by Erin Mayer

Isabel Marant, purveyor of endlessly covetable French designs, has vowed to stop wearing one of her biggest hits — the wedge sneaker. The reason? Too many inexpensive knock-offs! The designer told The Telegraph that she's officially over the wedge sneaker.

Marant, who has long been vocal about her distaste for having her work copied, expressed disgust at the level to which her sneakers have been knocked off by lower-end labels. "Everybody who has the wrong one looks quite bitchy, very vulgar, when mine are not at all," she said in her interview for The Telegraph.

Why an $800 price tag and a flashy designer label make a sneaker wedge less "vulgar" we don't quite understand, but it must be frustrating for designers when other companies profit from their hard work. Not only is Marant horrified by seeing others in knock-off versions of her sneakers, but she won't even wear her own anymore. It seems the knock-offs have rendered the real thing obsolete.

“I don’t wear them as often as I [used to] because I see too [many bad copies] in the street,” she said. “I’m not saying mine are the most beautiful shoes, but they have a certain [style].”

Marant has called it — the wedge sneaker is dead! Now we're left wondering which ugly shoe trend will emerge next. The rubber stiletto? The sneaker knee-high boot? The possibilities are endless!

Rest in peace, wedge sneaker. We will miss the way you made us look like we had inflated clown feet. Just kidding, we won't miss that at all. But you will certainly haunt our collective memory for decades to come.
