How Much Does An Oscar Weigh? Here Are 6 Points Of Comparison
The Oscars are coming up on March 2 and while there is a lot of talk about the nominees — Will Leo finally win? Will 12 Years a Slave take Best Picture? — there are some other aspects of the show that raise questions as well. In particular, that little gold naked statue. What's the deal with that? How tall it is? How much does an Oscar weigh?
According to the Oscar website, "MGM art director Cedric Gibbons designed a statuette of a knight standing on a reel of film gripping a crusader’s sword" soon after the Academy was formed in 1927. The Oscar statue "stands 13½ inches tall and weighs in at a robust 8½ pounds."
This is a pretty hefty trophy. As a point of comparison here are some other things that weigh 8½ pounds. This way you can hold 34 sticks of butter and really have a visceral experience of what it's like to be Cate Blanchett on Sunday.
Electric Guitar
1 electric guitar weighs 8½ pounds.
Papillon
1 papillon dog weighs 8½ pounds.
Butter
34 sticks of butter weigh 8½ pounds.
Baby
1 newborn baby weighs 8½ pounds. (Well, some of them do.)
Milk
A gallon of milk weighs 8½ pounds.
Pineapple
4½ pineapples weigh 8½ pounds.
Okay! I think you’re all set for Oscar night!
