We'll Finally Get To See A Good Cop On 'PLL'

This is not a hoax: Rosewood is finally getting a policeman who can actually do his job. In Entertainment Weekly's feature on the new Pretty Little Liars detective, they interviewed Nicholas Gonzalez, who will be playing Rosewood police department's newest member, Marco Furey. Furey is brought in "to handle open homicides" and, according to the Pretty Little Liars showrunner Marlene King, he's there because “[Toby’s] always protecting Spencer, so he can’t be so open-minded.”

King also provided some important information about Gonzalez's character: he's got a mind like a diamond: “I told [Nicholas] that Mona and Spencer are probably the smartest of all the Pretty Little Liars, and he is their equal,” King says. “He is the first cop that’s come to town who could compete intellectually with those two characters.”

This is huge. If you've watched the show from the beginning, you'll know that Rosewood's police department is a hotbed of incompetence. If you ever want to play couch detective and try and figure out who A is while watching the series for the first time, just strike any of the people Rosewood police department thinks are fishy off your suspect list. I feel like throwing darts blindfolded at a list of names would be a better way to weasel out A in Pretty Little Liars than relying on any of the police work that goes on.

Let's face the facts. Under the guardianship of the Rosewood police department, eight people were murdered (spoiler: admittedly Shana gets murdered in New York, but I'd still argue this counts, as she dies thanks to events that happen in Rosewood). Those are some serious murder statistics for a small town.

Not only are the police incapable of solving murders, they can't do the most basic police work. When they've got Ali hooked up to a lie detector to interrogate her, they still manage to get no useful information whatsoever out of her. Oh, yeah, the department's also painfully badly organized. Why exactly would they assign Toby, who has dated and befriended various different Liars, to the Mona murder case? Literally zero percent chance of him being level-headed and objective about the investigation, surely?

So thank goodness Rosewood police department have taken the bold leap of employing a cop with more than two brain cells to rub together. Their timing's perfect, because we learn later in the Entertainment Weekly article that “There will be new homicides as well,” with Gonzalez comparing this season to "someone turning on a firehose and offering you a drink. It’s a lot going on.”

Rosewood, let's hope Furey's the best damn cop out there. He's going to be kept very busy this summer.
