You Won't Be Able To Shut Up About These Movies

by Teresa Newsome

When I was in college, I used to live for those classes where you read a book and then talked every detail to death. These days, sadly, my book reading has declined. Adulting demands too much attention. But Netflix movies that are impossible to stop talking about help to fill my college lit void. I still read, of course, but it doesn't take as much time or effort to soak in a flick, then tear it apart with my nerdy Facebook friends after a long, long, long day at work. Such is the way of things sometimes!

This collection of movies might not represent the newest or most popular media out there, but it definitely contains some that will keep you talking for hours. Think of it like a book club reading list, except for movies. Then discuss your heart out to anyone who will play with you. And if you can't find anyone, it only takes two seconds on Google to find throngs of sites devoted to rabid film critics who want nothing more than to theorize the symbolism of the red door or the blue car.

Or you can just gossip about the hot actors and complain about the twisted endings. Either way, these are some fun ones to contemplate.

1. Dear Zachary

How do you even begin to tell a child about his father who was murdered, or his mother, who committed the crime? This one will haunt you. You'll be talking about it like you were talking about Steven Avery.

2. Shawshank Redemption

Can you ever truly take a person's freedom? Can hope endure the penal system? Get busy living or get busy dying, as they say.

3. Hot Fuzz

If you're weary of the recent movements against police brutality and racial profiling, it might be therapeutic to have a good laugh at the police.

4. Oldboy

I don't want to give anything away. I'll just say this movie will change the way you think about revenge.

5. Best In Show

I could watch and discuss this movie every day, forever.

6. American Beauty

Is the American Dream really a nightmare? What are we accomplishing by chasing it? And can a plastic bag really be a thing of beauty? Warning for devastating gay subplot and upsetting adult/child sexual interplay.

7. Food Inc.

Just in case you're the only person left on the planet who hasn't watched this movie and had self-righteous conversations with your mail carrier about factory farming.

8. Silver Lining's Playbook

I told everyone I know about this movie. As a person with mental illness, it's so nice to be portrayed as a somewhat regular, functioning member of society, rather than a serial killer.

9. V For Vendetta

One of the better comic book adaptations. It might be required reading/watching depending on how the upcoming election turns out. Plus there's the age old question: Should masks be a thing we're all doing?

10. Into The Wild

You know you want to watch this movie and endlessly debate the meaning of existence and how it's obscured by capitalism and inappropriately identified herbs.

11. Battle Royale

Battle Royale is the original Hunger Games. Kind of disturbing, FYI, but raises some important discussion points.

12. Serenity

Wild west soap opera in space? Come on now. How could it not be awesome.

13. Hachi: A Dog's Tale

Dogs are so much better than people. Discuss.

14. Blackfish

I used to love Sea World. So thanks for making me hate myself. Just kidding! This is a must watch for animal lovers. It's got juicy corporate cover ups and everything.

15. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

So much to discuss here you might as well just make it the topic of your grad school thesis.

Warn your friends before you watch any of these, because they might want to put the phone on mute for a few hours while you go on incessantly about them.
