'Hamilton' Had One Last Surprise At The Tonys

by Kayla Hawkins

It wasn't much of a surprise to hear Barbara Streisand give Hamilton the Tony Award for Best Original Musical — she even took time to joke that her colonial blouse was the perfect wardrobe choice for the night. The show was totally expected to win the big prize, but it did manage to have one final shocker. The Hamilton cast performed "The Schuyler Sisters" at the Tonys just before the final credits rolled, surprising viewers at home who were surely grateful to get another look at the musical that is notoriously hard to nab a ticket to. When producer Jeffrey Seller, who accepted the award for Best Original Musical, finished his speech with "Look around, look around, how lucky we are to be alive right now," fans must have immediately perked up at the reference to the show's introduction to Angelica, Eliza... and Peggy, hoping to hear a rendition of that chorus — and that's exactly what they got.

The final performance also provided a chance to hear some of the women of the cast sing, since the spotlight performance earlier in the Tonys focused primarily on Hamilton, Burr, Washington, Lafayette, and Hercules Mulligan. "Yorktown" is a great number, but it doesn't feature Renée Elise Goldberry's now Tony-winning performance as Angelica Schuyler or Phillipa Soo's vocals as Eliza Hamilton. Watch the final surprise performance below.

In a show that makes a point of exploring the women of the American Revolution, it was a perfect choice to end the Tony Awards with a Hamilton performance that highlights the talented women in the cast.
