What We Know About 'Moana' From The Trailer

by Michelle Lulic

Ever since Disney first announced they would be adding a Polynesian princess to their roster, the ever-growing need to find out more about her has been palpable within the Disney-loving community. Moana, voiced by Hawaiian newcomer Auli'i Cravalho, made her official debut Sunday night with the release of the very first trailer for Moana, the self-titled upcoming film. While the audience's attention may be drawn to the introduction of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's demi-god character, Maui, there's also quite a bit of the new Disney princess herself. Fans can get a sense of her personality and her strength within a matter of just a few seconds, which basically means that she's totally awesome already.

The teaser trailer — which runs just over a minute in length — includes the likes of Moana, Maui, and her adorable pig companion, as they explore beautiful lands full of palm trees and the immensity of the ocean. Through that, a few things about the Disney princess already shine through. For example, the end of the trailer emphasizes Moana's love for the ocean and her culture, while her first appearance at the 40-second mark highlights her sassiness and awe at the world around her. Then, at the 57-second mark, it becomes clear that, even though she has a demi-god by her since, she can take care of herself. This princess can wield her own spear, and it seems like there's no challenge too big for her to face.

Essentially, in just a minute, Moana proves herself to be a relatable and strong Disney princess of color we have been waiting for. Just take a look at the trailer for yourself to see what I'm talking about.

Everything we're seeing in the trailer is also further proof of what has already been released about the Polynesian princess. Aside from her strong sense of bravery, Disney describes Moana as a "born navigator" and "a sea voyaging enthusiast." And the cause of her journey through the ocean? To save her family from danger, with the help of her dreams, her animal friends, and elements of Polynesian mythology, Moana is already someone I can't help but admire, and this is only the beginning of her journey thus far.

All in all, there's no denying how exciting her introduction into the Disney world is going to be. Moana sails into theaters November 23, 2016.
