This Netflix Film Is Going To Be Out Of This World

by Emily Lackey

Netflix has done it again. Branching into buying the rights to a ton of original TV shows and films, Netflix has scooped up another project that is sure to be a blockbuster. An out-of-the-world blockbuster from the sounds of it, because The Discovery, starring Rooney Mara, Jason Segel, and Robert Redford sounds like it’s going to be absolutely amazing. It was announced on Monday that Netflix bought the exclusive rights to The Discovery and will be premiering it on their streaming service and in select theaters in 2017. But not only is the project starring some of today’s top talent, the scope and other-worldliness of the film sounds like one that people will be talking about for a long time after it is released.

This sci-fi love story from the brilliant mind of writer and director Charlie McDowell will be set in our world, but one year after alien life has first been discovered. In an effort to “reset” the world, citizens of earth have started taking their own lives in an attempt to give the planet another chance. For fans of dystopian and apocalyptic storylines, this movie sounds like it’s going to be a fast fan favorite. But even filmgoers who prefer a more straightforward storyline will likely love this movie. With a love story mixed in between themes of preservation and sacrifice, this movie sounds like one that everyone will love.

Robert Redford has already signed on to play the man responsible for discovering alien life in the first place. Jason Segel will play his son. Rooney Mara will star as the woman that Jason Segel’s character falls in love with, but the fact that she is haunted by a tragic past will likely complicate their love story a bit. Still, if you’re thinking this story is going to be another sci-fi love story, you might want to think again. Netflix COO Ted Sarandos is already saying that the film is indescribable in its otherworldliness: “To describe the story as original doesn’t begin to capture the world that Charlie has created that will envelop you.”

So, basically, fans are in for something that will defy their expectations of both romance and science fiction, and I am so about that life. Netflix's original program is always on point when it comes to providing different perspectives and voices to the Emmy-winning landscape, but the projects that they choose to bring onto the platform for everyone to enjoy can be just as on point and provide equally different perspectives. Just like this film.

The Discovery is set premiere on Netflix and in select theaters sometime in 2017. It joins a long list of original films that Netflix will be debuting in the coming year, including The Fundamentals of Caring, Tallulah, The Little Prince, and War Machine.
