'Nurse Jackie' Renewed for Sixth Season

by Kate Ward

With Weeds off the air and The Big C fielding its final diagnosis just one month ago, Showtime — one of the few cable networks with a focus on strong female characters — is starting to shift its DNA. Big C, Weeds, and The L Word are gone, while male fronted dramas like House of Lies, Dexter, and Californication live on.

Luckily, there's still Homeland — set for a fall premiere — and, now, Nurse Jackie, which the network announced will return for a sixth season in 2014. “Nurse Jackie is an essential part of the Showtime brand, and we are thrilled with the series’ growth in its fifth season,” Showtime Entertainment president David Nevins said in a release. “Under the new leadership of Clyde Phillips, and with an amazing cast led by Edie Falco, this show is as sharp and compelling and entertaining as ever. I’m excited to get to see the next chapter in Jackie’s life.”

Seems prognosis is good for Showtime.
