Another Season Of 'Penny Dreadful' Needs To Happen

Anyone who thinks that Showtime's Penny Dreadful isn't a fantastically terrifying and unforgettable show is either a liar or has never actually watched a single episode of the series before. Those are really the only possible explanations I can think of considering no one could not enjoy Penny Dreadful and its wonderfully weird characters and creatures. So you can imagine my surprise at the fact that, even though Penny Dreadful Season 3 is coming to a close, the supernatural series has yet to get picked up for a fourth season. I mean, what the heck is the network waiting for? Is there a chance Penny Dreadful won't get renewed for Season 4? That idea is more horrific to me than any monster this series has created (which believe me is saying something). Update: On June 20, TVLine reported that Penny Dreadful has been cancelled and will not return for a fourth season.

Earlier: As of now, no official pick up has been announced, which has many fans worried it may soon face the cancelation chopping block. However, the higher-ups could just be waiting to announce the renewal closer to the finale date for publicity purpose, so let's try not to panic too much just yet. Plus, it's also a good sign that the promo for Sunday's two-episode finale, referred to it as the season finale, not series finale, which means there may still be hope for the show. But just in case Showtime needs a little extra nudge in the right direction, here's why I believe Penny Dreadful deserves to stick around and live to frighten us another day.

The Acting Is Superb

Obviously, Eva Green's portrayal of the tragic heroine, Vanessa Ives, is nothing short of jaw-dropping and definitely the stuff Emmy nominations are made of. But it's that kind of raw talent that can be found throughout a vast majority of the cast and raises the caliber of the show to a whole new level. These guys and gals know how to deliver a powerful monologue and leave you thirsty for more.

The Storylines Are Captivating

From ferocious werewolf attacks to threesomes bathed in blood, there's no plot this series doesn't dare to touch. And the best part is that they're all equally enthralling. You may find a mere conversation between two characters to be just as captivating as an epic battle. This show has the ability to somehow turn the ordinary into extraordinary and make you anxious to see what will happen next.

It Doesn't Villainize Those Who Are Different

Yes, this is a show about monsters, but those monsters don't necessarily have to be the bad guys. In fact, at times they're actually the real heroes of the story. After all, what's more terrifying: John's kind but disfigured face or Victor's plot to take away Lily's free will? I rest my case.

It's More Than Just A Horror Series

Don't get me wrong, horror definitely plays an important part on the show, but it isn't the only thing Penny Dreadful focuses on. Whether it's female empowerment like Lily's uprising against the wrongdoings of men or Ethan's journey of redemption for the sins of his past, this show has a lot of heart, and I'm not just talking about the ones that get ripped out of their chests. The series is layered and complicated and beautiful even amid all of the bloodshed. There's no other show on TV quite like it, which is why it deserves more time to shine.

So come on, Showtime. Hurry up and announce its renewal already. Or else Vanessa won't be the only one who decides to give into her darker nature.
