We're in Love With H&M's Fall 2014 Collection

by Tyler Atwood

We have certain expectations for the tone of Paris Fashion Week, which is why we were beyond delighted when H&M's Fall 2014 runway brought fun back into fashion. That the clothing was flattering and wearable didn't come as a surprise; the brand is a goldmine for everyday basics and chic wardrobe staples. What we didn't expect was how trendy and playful the ensembles were, made all the more remarkable by the fact that the models wearing them were actually smiling, a fashion week anomaly if we've ever seen one. Altogether, we'd say H&M's Studio collection is off to a very chic start.

H&M's Studio collection, showcased by smiling models, had a downtown chic vibe, pairing motorcycle jackets with minidresses, and leather trousers with shimmering chiffon tops. When asked about the line's inspiration, Ann-Sofie Johansson, head of design, explained that the collection "should feel cool. It should feel effortless."

Rendered in a neutral palette of black and white with pops of red, the collection took an nonchalant approach to after-hours dressing, adding sparkle and unconventional silhouettes to utilitarian basics. The feel seemed to hint towards a bit of '60s edginess, as if some of the pieces were pulled from Penny Lane's wardrobe in Almost Famous.

Of course, we wouldn't truly know the collection was a success without the presence of eager A-listers populating the front row. Miranda Kerr and Solange Knowles joined Jessica Alba and other celebrities to celebrate the new collection, which was topped off by a performance from French actress Hollysiz. The theme of the collection may be effortless cool, but we think the real essence of H&M's Studio line is fun.
