Good News & Bad News For 'Orphan Black' Fans

by Courtney Lindley

All great things must come to an end. Unfortunately for Orphan Black fans, that great thing is Orphan Black. TV Line reports that the show will end after its fifth season, as BBC America announced Thursday. But, wait. Blink and you might have missed it. Orphan Black will be getting a Season 5. See, there's a silver lining after all? It might not totally qualm your fears of a TV world devoid of Orphan Black, but it certainly helps. Especially since Season 4 comes to a close on June 16.

Co-creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson released a statement regarding the news. “We are excited to deliver an epic conclusion to the tale of Sarah and her clone sisters." They continued, "The past four seasons have been a phenomenal adventure, and we are eternally grateful to our loyal fans who have loved the twists and thrills of our weird little show. We are thankful to our partners at Temple Street, and to BBC AMERICA and Space for their support and giving us the opportunity to end on a high.” Again, another good bit of news. The opportunity to end on a high, to wrap Orphan Black up with a big ribbon and never let it jump the shark, as can happen with some long running TV shows.

Orphan Black stars the talented Tatiana Maslany as several identical clones. Maslany has been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award, has won two Critics Choice awards, Television Critics Association award for her performance, and was nominated for an Emmy in 2015. In 2014, the series picked up a Peabody award. Safe to say the show and its breakout star will be hugely missed by critics and fans alike.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the final episode of Season 4 will end on a massive cliffhanger, setting the stage for a momentous last season. President of BBC America, Sarah Barnett, said "We can’t wait to take our incredibly passionate audience on one final gobsmacking clone adventure." With this team of writers, producers, and cast, I can't imagine that Season 5 will be anything less than utterly, completely gobsmacking. And like Barnett, I think most of us can't wait.

Season 5 will consist of 10 episodes and will premiere sometime in 2017, so prepare yourselves now. Emotionally, spiritually, physically. Just prepare. Orphan Black, out.
