Kim Kardashian's View On Politics Is Interesting

by Nicole Pomarico

As the 2016 presidential elections grow closer and closer, your friends on Facebook probably get more annoying, and celebrities on Twitter are probably also using their social media to spread the word about their favorite candidate. But so far, a certain mega successful reality star has stayed surprisingly mum about the topic— until now. In a new (and totally fascinating) interview with GQ, Kim Kardashian explains her political views, but what she says isn't just about who she'll be voting for in November. Instead, she explained how she has a unique view of politicians that the rest of us might not have thought about before, and her stance is actually pretty interesting.

You've probably already guessed that Kardashian is on Team Hillary Clinton, because she's posted about her before, including a few selfies she and Kanye West have taken with her, but that's really all that she's said about the upcoming election. And in the interview, she confirms that she's planning to vote for Clinton, but it's not because she's always been a straight up democrat. Right before the 2012 elections, Kardashian revealed to The Guardian that actually, she's what she'd consider a "liberal republican" — socially liberal but fiscally conservative —but it sounds like now her views have changed. And even if you don't agree with her political leanings, after hearing her out it's hard to deny her decision has been a pretty thoughtful one.

Kardashian told GQ that she now votes Democrat, and it's because as she's gotten older and matured, she's realized that her opinions aren't the same as the ones she's grown up with — something that a lot of us go through. "As I've grown up, I decided what I think is best for me instead of what my parents would have voted for," she told the magazine. And being that there are people who tend to go by what their parents taught them without doing any research for themselves, I have to give her props for that. Voting is such an awesome right that hasn't always been open to women, and I love that Kardashian takes it seriously.

And while she was on the subject of politics, something else that separates Kardashian from the rest of us became pretty evident. In a video for her app that Kardashian reviewed during the interview, she's seen saying that she loves George Bush, something that ultimately ends up on the cutting room floor. Her people wanted to cut it out (and that's exactly what happened in the end), but Kardashian seemed pretty bummed about it. She said, "I love George, though. I just think he's cute. Like a cute little president.... And the [Bush] kids sent us a baby gift. Let me think about it."

It's interesting that Kardashian has this kind of perspective on politicians and public figures, and it's something that I haven't thought about before. Instead of judging Bush on the mistakes he may have made in office or his policy, Kardashian likes him for the way his family has treated her. Most of us will never get to see how a former president or future candidate would treat us if we were a close friend they interacted with in their personal life. Maybe it clouds her political opinions? Or maybe it makes it that much clearer for her. Politicians are people, too, and I really love that Kardashian is willing to remain unchanged by what the people around her say.

If there's anything this interview has accomplished — especially this part of it — it's only made me love Kardashian more. It'll definitely be interesting to see her posts through this election season should they even exist. For someone who's open about everything, I hope this isn't the time she chooses to stay private. Her opinions are interesting, and I think she has a lot to add to the conversation.
