The 'Ghostbusters' Squad Is Getting Animated

by Allie Gemmill

Forget the haters. If you love the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, you're aces in my book. This film is literally poised to be one of the best films of the summer. The cast interviews have already elicited some fun nuggets of information, like Kristin Wiig and Melissa McCarthy's spin on the theme song. We've gotten to hear new music from the Ghostbusters soundtrack , which will be sure to keep us tapping our toes until the premiere. The best part about this Ghostbuster madness is that we still haven't even reached the peak of the frenzy. Once we've watched the reboot a hundred times over, you can bet your bottom dollar you'll be craving more action, more color and more hijinks. That's where Sony Pictures Animation will be stepping in, working to bring us a new animated Ghostbusters series.

Aiming to satisfy both the cartoon-loving kids in all of us, the new Ghostbusters series will reportedly "expand on the Ghostbusters cinematic universe and focus on a new generation of 'Ghostbusters' in the year 2050 who capture ghosts around the world with help from local teams." You guys, this is too major and too cool not to get excited over. I am still trying to remain calm but, frankly, it's difficult. This new show not only opens up the pathway for an animated show to provide a diverse cast of characters but there's a major opportunity to utilize the all-female cast from the Ghostbusters reboot as the awesomely ass-kicking, animated squad.

Utilizing the all-female team for this new series isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility. It would make sense for Sony Picture Animation to capitalize on the momentum of the reboot by using the new characters that this younger generation will grow to know and love. Even if the animated series jumps in time to 2050 or has a global scope to it, who's to say it prevents the possibility of a core female cast? Better still, there's precedent in carrying over the original cast to an animated format. During the height of Ghostbusters-mania in the '80s, The Real Ghostbusters was an animated series that featured the original core characters from the feature film. All animated, all male, all the time. Who's the say the studio shouldn't keep the trend alive and give the new female characters a second chance in animated form?

The new Ghostbusters has rightfully earned its praise for gender-flipping the script and ushering in opportunities for America's leading female comedians to showcase their myriad talents. This reboot is a testament to the ways in which Hollywood provides new opportunities for women in film. Letting the female team get a second life in animated form would be a great way to stick to the canon and develop their characters further. All things considered, I'm fully ready to revel in all the Ghostbusters glory.
