White House Slams The Senate's "Cowardice"

After the Senate failed to pass any of the four gun control bills Monday, the White House slammed its "shameful display of cowardice." Those were the words used by White House spokesperson Josh Earnest, who spoke on MSNBC's Morning Joe on Tuesday about the Senate's inability to pass any of the gun control measures. Connecticut Sen. Daniel Murphy led a filibuster for nearly 15 hours last week to force a conversation about gun control in the Senate after the horrific attack on Orlando's Pulse nightclub, which marked the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. It led to four new pieces of gun control legislation, but none earned enough votes.

Earnest went on to say, "The reason that I describe it as cowardice is I don't know what else to call it. Cowards are people who talk really tough in the hope that they will not be asked to actually act and do something. And the truth is that's exactly what Republicans have done."

President Obama also did not mince words when it came to criticizing the Senate. He tweeted out on Tuesday that: "Gun violence requires more than moments of silence. It requires action. In failing that test, the Senate failed the American people."

There is a fifth piece of legislation expected to be introduced by Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine on Tuesday, though it's by no means clear that it will fare any better than the four voted upon on Monday.
