5 Sci-fi Series 'Wynonna Earp' Fans Should Watch

by Molly Freeman

There are plenty of comic book superheroes on television nowadays, but Syfy has its own comic-based hero in Wynonna Earp — adapted from the Image Comics/IDW Publishing series. However, the first season of Syfy's supernatural western show is drawing to a close and many fans may be pondering one very important question: Will Wynonna Earp return for Season 2? Unfortunately, Syfy hasn't made an official announcement either way, whether the show has been renewed or cancelled.

So what do we know about Wynonna Earp's chances of being renewed? Well, the ratings aren't great. According to TV Series Finale's most recent ranking of the shows on Syfy, Wynonna Earp has a .13 rating in the 18-49 demo, placing it at number 10, which is below cancelled series like Dominion and Haven. However, if we take a look at how the show performs with reviews and viewer reactions, there's a little more hope. Wynonna Earp holds an 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (both from viewers and critics) as well as a 68 percent on Metacritic from critics and a 6.9 user rating meaning "generally favorable reviews." Of course, all this means the chances of Wynonna Earp's renewal are even harder to guess, but if you need something to tide you over until Syfy makes a decision, I've got some TV series to check out.

Killjoys

Want another Syfy series this summer? Catch up on the first season of Killjoys, a show about a team of bounty hunters chasing criminals and other types around a futuristic galaxy. Think Firefly meets Wynonna Earp. The first season is available in its entirety of Hulu and season 2 premieres July 1 on Syfy.

The 100

Although The 100 sort of lost its way in season 3, the first two seasons of The CW's critically acclaimed sci-fi drama are available to watch on Netflix. I dare you not to blow through both seasons in record binge-watching time.

Lost Girl

Technically Lost Girl is more of a fantasy series since it includes supernatural creatures like succubi and Fae, but Wynonna Earp deals with demons so it's not too much of a stretch for fans of Syfy's western series. Plus, there are five seasons of Lost Girl on Netflix, in case you need a longer show to binge watch.

Orphan Black

It's nice to watch a show with a strong female lead, but you know what's better? A show with four strong female leads — albeit all played by the same actress. If you haven't already checked out Orphan Black, do it now. The first three seasons are available on Amazon Video.

Jessica Jones

If you enjoy the sass of Wynonna, then you're sure to love Jessica Jones, the former superhero turned private investigator who's a mix of Veronica Mars and a bottle of whiskey. The first season is available on Netflix.

So, it may be some time before we find out whether Wynonna Earp has been renewed or cancelled, but there's some great strong ladies on other sci-fi TV shows to fill the void until we receive news.
