When To Use Your Ticketmaster Vouchers This Summer

by Lily Feinn

Over the weekend, nearly 57 million people received a surprising email alerting them to the fact that vouchers for free and discounted tickets were waiting to be redeemed in their Ticketmaster account. One big question still remains — when can you use your Ticketmaster vouchers, and for what exactly?

For those of you coming to the party a little late, the ticket vouchers are a result of a lawsuit that was filed against Ticketmaster in 2003 over its ticket purchasing and UPS shipping fees. The lawsuit gained class-action status in 2011, making anyone who used the Ticketmaster service part of "the class." In 2015, the court approved the settlement with Ticketmaster agreeing to pay the fees back to anyone who used their service to make a purchase between Oct. 21, 1999 and Feb. 27, 2013. They are obliged to pay back $42 million over the next four years.

Ticketmaster has sent a massive first wave of discount codes — so for heaven’s sake, jump on them before they expire! You can check how many vouchers you have been awarded by clicking this link, and signing into your Ticketmaster account (there may be as many as 17).

Ticketmaster is currently offering three different kinds of vouchers: a $2.25 discount on any show (which if you have multiple, you can use together for one larger discount), a UPS ticket delivery discount of $5, or two free tickets to a select group of concerts. You can see which events qualify by checking out the Live Nation Ticket list here. Who knew your die-hard commitment to The Warped Tour in high school would still be paying out years later?

The qualified events start as early as today and run through Oct. 29. Throughout the summer, free tickets can be used for a limited number of events including shows by Bob Dylan, Modest Mouse, Snoop Dogg, Alabama Shakes, Weezer, Salt N Pepa, The Cure, and many more. While the concerts are spread out across the country, it seems like some of the biggest names are coming to New Jersey, California, Georgia, North Carolina, and Massachusetts; so to take advantage of the best offers you may need to do a little traveling.

Redeeming said tickets may be competitive as they are on a first come, first serve basis. The New York Times reports that Ticketmaster is sending $10 million worth of free ticket vouchers to be used through May of 2017. Depending on how many discount codes are claimed, Ticketmaster may release more free tickets to make up for the difference in their obligatory payout.
