Kelly Rowland Talks Crazy Destiny's Child Outfits

by Lia Beck

If you were a fan of Destiny's Child in the late '90s and early '00s, there are probably a few things that come to mind when you think back about the group. For me, I remember singing along to "No, No, No" with friends, watching the "Bug A Boo" video and thinking they were the coolest people ever, and marveling at the many, many over-the-top coordinated outfits created by one Miss Tina Knowles. While wearing various cuts of blue camo might have seemed like a good idea at the time, in 2016 it's hard to look back at the outfits of Destiny's Child and not think they look pretty dated. And it's clear that at least one member agrees. On Wednesday, while celebrating Breyers' 150th birthday in New York City, Kelly Rowland shares the set of Destiny's Child coordinating outfits that she thinks were the craziest, and she has a pretty specific way of describing them.

"It was one where we look like little chickens," she tells Bustle. "They were all yellow with feathers at the bottom. I was like, 'Oh, we really missed the mark.' We had some really cute outfits and then that one, and we looked like little chickens."

Rowland can't remember where she, Beyoncé, and Michelle Williams were when they wore the outfits, but I'm guessing she means these very yellow numbers from the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards in 2000:

I'm not sure if I would say they look like "little chickens" myself, but apparently the feeling really stuck with Rowland.

And coordinated outfits aren't the only thing from the early aughts that Rowland hasn't been able to forget. There's also a specific moment from the 2002 video for "Dilemma" that fans are still obsessed with talking about. In the video, Rowland can be seen texting her collaborator Nelly using what appears to be an Excel spreadsheet on a flip phone. Asked about it still being popular on the internet today, she says, "I know! I was like, 'Why is that a thing?' And they’re like, 'Why is she typing on the Excel spreadsheet?' And I was like, 'I don’t know!'"

At the time, she didn't think about it being weird. "I didn’t even know until somebody showed me, and I was like, 'Oh, it was.' I didn’t even think about it then. And that was in 2002? 2003?"

Much like the rest of us, Rowland has moved on from coordinating her outfits with her friends and texting using actual buttons. These days, she's working on new music, raising her son, Titan, and preparing to launch a makeup line called F.A.C.E. (For All Created Equal). But if she wants to throw an Excel spreadsheet into any new videos she might be filming, I'm sure fans would appreciate the gesture.
