Adele's '25' Is On Spotify, Y'All

by Michelle Lulic

Hello, it's Adele. She's been wondering if after all these months we'd like to stream. OK, I'm done with my Hello" parody, because all I'm really trying to say is that Adele's latest album, 25 , is now available on Spotify in areas around the world where it's already Friday. Which means that Spotify listeners everywhere will soon have the opportunity to turn back into sad pumpkins dramatically sulking over their exes at the stroke of midnight — and there's no other way I would rather spend my weekend then streaming (and belting) every moving, sappy, emotion-filled song. But, in case you haven't already figured this out, there's something strange about the sudden appearance of the album.

That is the fact that Adele was originally against the idea of having her music readily available for streaming as opposed to purchase. “I don’t use streaming. I buy my music. I download it, and I buy a physical [copy] just to make up for the fact that someone else somewhere isn’t," Adele revealed to TIME magazine upon her album's release. "It’s a bit disposable, streaming. I know that streaming music is the future, but it’s not the only way to consume music. I can’t pledge allegiance to something that I don’t know how I feel about yet.” So, why the change of heart?

Well, for one, it's been about over seven months now since her album was initially released on November 20, 2015. If Adele still feels strongly about having her fans directly purchase her music, then the seven month gap with no reassurance that 25 will ever appear on Spotify has given them more than enough time to properly purchase and download the album. However, by choosing to add her music to Spotify now, it's almost as if Adele is providing fans with an added bonus: the ability to create Adele-centered playlists to hold over their emotional needs from basically anywhere in the world with access to internet. And that, my friends, is a beautiful gift.

But, on a more serious note, perhaps there's more to this decision than what meets the eye. It could be as simple as the label, XL Recordings, deciding it was the next best move or as drastic as Adele becoming a recent Spotify fan herself. In fact, the latter may be a possibility. Adele took to Twitter on Tuesday to share The Hour's song, "Answer," from which it appears that she might have been listening to via Soundcloud, yet another music streaming service.

It could be only a matter of time until Adele's music becomes available on both Soundcloud and Spotify immediately upon the release of any of her future new music. My friends... This is only the beginning.
