Update: As of Thursday morning, Reuters and the Associated Press are reporting that the gunman who opened fire in a Viernheim cinema complex has been killed by authorities, but that there were no serious injuries caused by the gunman.

Earlier: On Thursday morning Eastern Time, local newspapers began reporting a shooting in a movie theater complex not far from Frankfurt, Germany. Photos and videos of the Viernheim shooting are still scarce as events continue to develop, but many show heavily-armed police at the scene.

According to The Guardian, a masked man carrying a gun and a munition belt entered the Kinopolis complex around 3 p.m. local time. He reportedly fired once into the air, but Sky News reports that there were no major injuries caused by the gunman. Outlets reported earlier that at least 20 people were injured during the situation, possibly as many as 50; however, these reports appear to be incorrect. Many of the injured are thought to be suffering the effects of the tear gas used by police to subdue the gunman. According to Reuters and the Associated Press, the attacker was the only one seriously injured in the attack.

Photos of the situation show armed police outside the theater, which appeared to be cordoned off.
