This Bridezilla Really Takes The Cake

Going to a wedding is already a rough and tumble experience for your bank account, whether or not you've been included in the wedding party. So imagine the shock of on anonymous woman posting on the platform Mamamia about a bride who asked her bridesmaids to chip in for her wedding dress — which came to a whopping $10,500.

First, let's back up a little bit and examine the already insane expectations of being a bridesmaid in this day and age. Considering you are obligated to pay for your dress, your travel to the wedding, your wedding gift, and miscellaneous expenses for the bachelorette party or bridal shower (if you take pity on the Maid of Honor, that is), all these factors add up so quickly that the average bridesmaid shells out $1,500 per wedding. If your bank account didn't just start weeping in the distance while you read that sentence, then you are probs better off than the majority of millennials (and hey, wanna be my Maid of Honor?).

But let's get back to our anonymous friend here, brought #WeddingDressGate to our attention. There were already some indications that the bride, who she calls Caroline in the article, wasn't exactly going to make the wedding a chill experience. Despite the fact that the anonymous poster has a full-time job, the bride asked her on a Friday to write up an Excel spreadsheet of cake vendors with "contact details, price brackets, flavours and an idea of how prestigious the vendor is" that same day; when the poster asked if it could wait another day so she could do it over the weekend, she received no reply. When she sent it on Saturday after canceling her breakfast plans to get it done, a mere day after it was requested, the bride replied:

"Thanks for this, would've been really helpful to have it yesterday when specified but I appreciate it."

OK, so that's pretty nerve-y on its own. But stay tuned, because the saga continues! After all of her bridesmaids agreed to shell out $550 each for bridesmaids dresses (yiiiiiiiikes), the bride had yet another request: that they all chip in to pay for her "dream dress," a $10,500 number that was twice her budget for it. The anonymous poster said that while the bridesmaids all encouraged her to get it after it looked so good on her, none of them did so with the intention of helping pay for it — but that three of the seven of them so far have responded to an email titled "Bridesmaid dress contribution" saying they'd be willing to help out.

Uh, wait. What?

Thankfully, the internet quickly chimed in to assure the poster that she was not overreacting in wondering if she should pull out of the wedding or end the friendship altogether. While everybody deserves to have whatever kind of wedding they want to have, nobody should ever obligate their friends and family in that way. It's one thing if someone offers (and even then, that is above and beyond the call of duty), but directly asking your friends to pay for something that, quite frankly, you probably shouldn't have been trying on in the first place is just entitled and inconsiderate. Justice for this anonymous poster's bank account and her missed breakfast! May she use the money she saved not paying for this dress to buy herself some well-deserved hash browns.
