Rihanna's New 'Star Trek Beyond' Song Is Eerie

by Caitlyn Callegari

If you are both a Rihanna fan and a Star Trek fan, you're about to have one especially good week. As per the singer's Twitter, Rihanna's Star Trek song, "Sledgehammer", is going to be released on June 26 at 8am EST. On Sunday, Ri Ri wrote on Twitter, #SLEDGEHAMMER @StarTrekMovie fans, be up tomorrow by 8am EST for a special premiere!" In that same tweet, she included a "Sledgehammer" teaser trailer with brief yet epic clips of your favorite characters from Star Trek Beyond, out July 22, accompanied by some ominous yet enticing background music. So, basically, it's lit.

The best part of the teaser, though, is not the montage of Star Trek characters itself, but how it bleeds into an equally epic preview of Rihanna's edgy "Sledgehammer." Listen, I wouldn't initially think that Rihanna would be synonymous with Star Trek, but if the teaser is any indication, the two entities seem to mesh in a very organic way. Why? Because the song teaser feels like a callback to Rihanna's earlier and perhaps a bit darker vibe, which she gave off in classic songs like "Disturbia." I know, I know, I'm just as excited about the prospect of a return to original Rih as you.

This notion of a return to Rihanna's edgier and grittier sort of music has got my wheels turning. Now that Anti is out, will her next album focus on more songs like "Sledgehammer" rather than the more soulful vibe her latest album perpetuates? I may be getting ahead of myself, but if "Sledgehammer" is what it appears to be, maybe it will. All I know for sure is that this Rihanna and Star Trek Beyond collaboration is something I can't wait to watch unfold.

In fact, here's a parting gift to get you pumped:

You're welcome.
