It Appears That Google Calendar Is Down

Oh no. Today might just not happen after all: Google Calendar is down. According to The Next Web, Google Calendar stopped working at 9:47 a.m. Eastern Time, and whatever issue the service seems to be having has yet to be fixed. On Thursday morning, Mashable reported that when Google Calendar users (i.e. everyone) attempt to open their calendar, they are redirected to a page saying there is a server error. However, Google has not said why Google Calendar is not working, and only told Mashable that they are investigating the issue and will provide more information soon.

Update: As of 11:30 a.m. Google Calendar is working again. Get back to work, folks!

For those who simply cannot function without the calendar service, the Google App Status Dashboard is working just fine, and it's easy to monitor whether or not Google Calendar is working from the page — however, Mashable reported that the information displayed on the page can be slightly delayed.

Considering that people from all over the world are tweeting about the Google Calendar issue, it's pretty clear that this is not an isolated incident — Google Calendar seems to be down worldwide. Google does not release exact numbers for how many people use its calendar service, but if Twitter's any indication, it's pretty much everyone.

Furthermore, Google Calendar is not the only Google service that users reported having issues with on Thursday morning — it seems as if Google Hangout is not working correctly, either. However, the reports of Google Hangout errors are less widespread according to Mashable, and The International Business Times reported that the issue with Google Hangouts has already been fixed.

It's not common for any of Google's services to be down, but this isn't the first time the tech giant has had issues. Back in April 2016, Google OAuth stopped working — the service is Google's tool for logging into third-party services — for a few hours, too.

Just after 11 a.m. Eastern Time, The New Web reported that Google Calendar is beginning to work again (yep, that meeting might happen after all); however, the Google Apps Status Dashboard still reports that Google Calendar is not working.

The New Web also alerted Google Calendar users that its possible to sign up to be alerted when Google Calendar works again — this service might come in handy for anyone who's snuck out of the office amid the lack-of-Google-Calendar-induced chaos.

But for the next few minutes at least, it's time to relax and experience the calendar-free world.
