Why Sansa Shouldn't Be Pregnant On 'GoT'

by Jordana Lipsitz

When, on Game of Thrones, Ramsay Bolton and Sansa Stark had their final encounter right before (spoiler alert!) he was ripped apart by his dogs, Ramsay's last words to his bride, "I'm part of you now," fueled the theory that Sansa is pregnant with Ramsay's demon spawn — er, child. Unfortunately, the fact that Ramsay raped Sansa every night makes it not completely out of the realm of possibility that the Stark heroine might have a Bolton baby in her womb, and when Ramsay said that line during that Thrones episode, viewers freaked out that it was hinting at Sansa's future. We won't know the truth until Season 7 premieres, but I know I'm just one of many GoT fans who believe that Sansa should not be pregnant, and that by making her so, GoT would be making a big mistake.

The reasons behind sitting/waiting/wishing/hoping/praying that Sansa isn't pregnant with Ramsay's child are many, but that's not to say that that scenario is definitely not going to happen, unfortunately. After all Sansa has been through, it wouldn't be that off-base to assume that such a thing could happen to her, and, after all, in her speech to Littlefinger, she said, "I can still feel it. I don't mean in my tender heart — it still pains me so — I can still feel what he did in my body, standing here right now." Could it be that Sansa was implying she's pregnant? I'm hoping that the answer is no, for the many reasons below.

1. She's Been Through Enough Already

Give her a reprieve from the darkness, Game of Thrones. I get that bad things happen to good people, but come on. After losing her entire family and Direwolf, serving as a pet/wife/torture toy to not one but two psychopaths, having a pretty dysfunctional relationship with her own Aunt Lysa, and being manipulated constantly by Littlefinger, Sansa could really use a break.

2. It Wouldn't Really Add Anything To The Storyline

We've got enough to worry about in Westeros without Sansa bearing a (potentially) demon baby in her womb. Let's focus on white walkers and the battle between the North and South before adding a baby into the mix.

3. It Would Be Difficult To Cover Such A Serious Issue

In what limited time the show has left — 13 episodes, over the course of two seasons — it seems pretty silly to add another loose end that needs to be tied up before the finale. Furthermore, a character dealing with an unwanted pregnancy is something that should be given plenty of attention and sensitivity, and I don't know if GoT has enough time left to give that storyline the focus it deserves.

4. Iwan Rheon Implied There Won't Be A Baby

In an interview with Bustle, Iwan Rheon, the actor who plays Ramsay, argued he didn't think Game of Thrones was hinting about any Stark/Bolton babies, saying, "I think what Ramsay's saying is, 'You'll never be able to shake me off. No matter if I die, I'm always gonna be a part of you, because of what I've done to you.'" Sounds promising — until you remember how often Game of Thrones actors have lied about plots in the series before.

5. Being Pregnant Could Limit Sansa

Obviously, women can do anything when they put their minds to it, pregnant or not. But if Sansa is going to devote all her time and energy into heading into battle against Cersei Lannister or the Night's King, she shouldn't have to worry about harming the baby inside of her or dealing with the complications of a pregnancy, too.

6. Everybody's Going To Want To Kill That Baby

Remember how Jon Snow's uncle, Ned, had to lie about the boy's birthright because everyone would want to kill Jon if they knew the truth? Well, with the North feeling all nationalistic, it would be no surprise if they went gunning for a Bolton baby even if it was also a Stark baby. It would be better for all of our sanity if that baby just didn't exist, so fans didn't have to watch someone try to kill Sansa's child after it's born, or worse, kill a pregnant Sansa simply because she's carrying it.

7. Sansa Needs Some Time For Herself

After everything she's had to deal with, can't a girl just get some solo time so she can chill at the weirwood trees by herself or take a nice, long bubble bath? Sansa needs some me-time.

8. Fans Don't Need To See More Trauma For Women

There's been a lot of violence towards women and rape on Game of Thrones, but recently, we've seen the show's women take control, with Cersei on the Iron Throne, Danaerys and Yara Greyjoy leading a fleet of ships to Westeros, Arya assassinating baddies and baking pies, and Lyanna Mormont shaming people left and right. With so much progress in that regard, must the show go backwards by making Sansa deal with a traumatic unwanted pregnancy?

9. The Baby Could Be Deal

I know, I know, there's no guarantee that Ramsay's child would be as evil as its father. But perhaps Ramsay was a sociopath with some seriously messed up genes, and I don't think any of us, and that includes Sansa, would want to deal with the repercussions of that, as seen in a child.

10. Having An Abortion Would Be Problematic

It is highly probable that if Sansa is pregnant, she might want to have an abortion. Considering Game of Thrones is a fantasy-filled world, chances are that Sansa would entrust the task to some witch. And if fans have learned anything about witches, it's that they kill babies with blood magic (Mirri Maz Duur) and burn pre-teens at the stake (Melisandre) — not exactly the people you'd expect to make the abortion a safe procedure for Sansa.

11. Littlefinger Would Ruin Sansa And Jon's Relationship

That guy just loves finding people's weaknesses and using said weaknesses to destroy everything they love, and a Bolton baby in the mix would definitely be considered a weakness, at least in his eyes. I predict that if it were to happen, Littlefinger would use the pregnancy to make a rift between Sansa and Jon, and no one wants to see that happen.

I'm hopeful Game of Thrones won't spring a baby on us, but I'm not convinced. Until we find out the truth, keep on wishing, praying, and hoping we don't have to see a baby shower for Sansa in Season 7.
