The 'Captain Fantastic' Soundtrack Is... Fantastic

Captain Fantastic is not your average film. The movie depicts the life of a family who has been raised in the middle of the wilderness in their parents' own version of utopia. The six children of the family know nothing of the outside world other than what they've read or been told by their parents, but when their mother dies, they are faced with the real world head on. Viggo Mortensen plays the idealistic patriarch who must lead them on their new journey, and it's all set to some very fitting music, making the Captain Fantastic soundtrack just as lovely as the rest of the film.

Thankfully for fans of the film's songs, the movie does have an official soundtrack release, and it will be available at outlets like iTunes and Amazon in the coming weeks (iTunes lists an expected release date of July 15, while Amazon says July 22). The mix is an eclectic blend of original soaring and folksy tracks, acoustic covers of popular songs performed by the cast, and even a little classical music for an added bit of culture. Here's the full track list:

  1. "Boy 1904" by Jónsi & Alex
  2. "Sweet Child O Mine" by Viggo Mortensen, George MacKay, Samantha Isler, Annalise Basso, Nicholas Hamilton, Kirk Ross & Philip Klein
  3. "Scotland the Braver" by Murray Huggins, Kirk Ross, Brian Tichy & David Delhomme
  4. "I Shall Be Released" by Kirk Ross, Tyra Juliette, Steven Wolf, David Delhomme & Jeff Thall
  5. "Rain Plans" by Israel Nash
  6. "Goldberg Variations; BWV 988, Variation 30 a 1 Clav. Quodlibet" by Glenn Gould
  7. "Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 4 in E-Flat Major, BWV 1010 Prélude" by Yo-Yo Ma
  8. "Varoeldur" by Sigur Rós
  9. "My Heart Will Go On" by The O'Neill Brothers Group
  10. "Goldberg Variations" by Kirk Ross

Several of the tracks are only available on the album, but here are a few you can listen to now as you're whisked away to a wooded paradise.

"Rain Plains" By Israel Nash

The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain, but these rain plains will have you dancing all around an imaginary campfire.

"Varoeldur" by Sigur Rós

This song is positively dripping with emotion. Excuse me while I dab my eyes with a maple leaf.

"My Heart Will Go On" By The O'Neill Brothers Group

Speaking of emotion, has the theme from Titanic ever sounded more beautiful and poignant?

The Captain Fantastic soundtrack does a great job of transporting the viewer into the world of the film, which is why I suspect fans will want to listen to it over and over again.
