The Lonely Island Is Headed To Freeform (Kinda)

by Jordana Lipsitz

Lovers of the hilarious and handsome trio The Lonely Island (aka Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer) , are certain to be overjoyed at the news that the pilot for the guys' new show, Alone Together , was picked up by Freeform. According to a press release, the series tells the story of "two overlooked millennial misfits from different backgrounds as they try to make their way into the vain and status-obsessed culture of Los Angeles, only to find salvation in their male/female strictly platonic friendship.” Its great to see that the boys will be involved in this new pilot — it certainly feels like they are movin' on up, as they've gone from Saturday Night Live shorts to features (Hot Rod, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) to their separate acting and directing gigs — but, I gotta ask: Will the Lonely Island actually be in Alone Together?

Sadly, the answer to that question is a big whopping "no," at least on a regular basis. Instead, the series will star Esther Povitsky and Benji Afalo, both of whom will also be writing and executive producing. But hey, Amy Poehler is executive producing Broad City, and she's made appearances on the show before — maybe Andy, Jorma, and Akiva will grace the series with various silly cameos, or even a re-occurring role or two! If they did, I'm sure no one would complain. At the very least, maybe we'll get ssome comedic Lonely island score action — I'm hopeful for some sort of parody track. (I'm not picky either, just throw me a Lonely-Island themed bone here, guys.)

Even without our favorite boys starring in the series, Alone Together seems destined to be a great time. The pilot joins other shows Freeform picked up such as Marvel's Cloak and Dagger and a reality series following the Bachelor Nation's Ben and Lauren, called Ben and Lauren: Happily Ever After.
