11 Times Celebs Rocked Classic Band Shirts

Just like you, me, and pretty much anyone who loves music, you may see celebrities wearing band shirts on occasion. Not only do band tees outwardly announce that one is a fan of a certain artist, but they're also comfy as anything and super easy to wear. Just throw one on over a pair of ripped skinny jeans and you've already mastered the art of grunge styling. Well done: That's a grimy gold star for you.

Substitute the jeans for shorts and throw on some glitter, and you have the most iconic festival look sorted. Clearly, there are countless ways to style a band shirt, so it's no wonder your favorite celebs have them in their wardrobes.

But however fab they look, there's a very one-sided battle between self-proclaimed "real" music fans and fashionistas. Do sartorial enthusiasts fully deserve to wear the band tee of their choice, even if they don't listen to the music, or should these tops be solely reserved for the "true" music aficionados? I'm definitely not a fan of music merchandise elitism or of policing what other people wear, but that's just me.

Celebrities are often the first people to come under fire of the "you aren't a true fan like me" barrage, especially female ones. IMO, this is thinly-veiled sexism under the guise of music knowledge. To celebrate the celebs rocking band tees whether they're fans of the tunes or not, here are 11 pictures of famous women rocking band tops without apology and looking stunning while doing so.

1. Ke$ha

Cutting the sleeves and collar of your chosen band shirt to make your own DIY tank is a great way to add that extra edge to your look. Here you can see pop babe Kesha wearing her Metallica tee while holding an immensely glam and fluffy coat. I love how she's been seen in this top multiple times before, which could potentially signal that it's genuinely her own and not on loan from a stylist.

2. Kendall Jenner

If you were to be backstage at Diane Von Furstenberg's New York Fashion Week runway show earlier this year, you would've likely spotted a certain Kendall Jenner rocking a gray KISS shirt while getting her makeup done by the experts. This is another classic case whereby she's been spotted in the same item multiple times, which probably means it's one of her own. I love it.

3. Zoë Kravitz

Here's a lovely monochromatic post straight from Zoë Kravitz's Instagram page in which she's representing rap rock legends The Beastie Boys. Wearing an oversized tee tucked into high-waisted mom jeans is always a classic, comfortable, and casual look.

4. Miley Cyrus

This one isn't exactly a shirt, but Miley Cyrus was seen sporting a particularly impressive dress featuring the faces of Biggie Smalls and Tupac and the words "Please Stop Violence." It's not exactly subtle, but honestly this may be one of my favorite M.C. looks of all time. I could so imagine this outfit getting some decent wear at a summer festival.

5. Cara Delevingne

What is it about models and KISS? This particular design worn by British model and actor Cara Delevingne at NYFW uses the band's iconic lettering but is actually a slogan muscle tee with the words "kiss me" emblazoned across the front. The top's existence is all thanks to a collaboration between Kangol and London-based streetwear brand Terrible Movement. You too can get this look from the website.

6. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato was looking particularly witchy in her sheer maxi skirt, Dr. Martens, black hat, and Incubus T-shirt combo. I'm really admiring the contrast tartan sleeves that matched with her nail polish and lilac dip dye, too. Yet another celeb look that wouldn't be out of place at a rock night or music festival.

7. Tess Holliday

She may or may not have woken up wearing this Beyoncé slogan shirt, but Tess Holliday was looking seriously glam on her way to New York City. This is definitely better than my no makeup and tracksuit bottom traveling combo, for sure.

8. Megan Fox

I'm not going to lie: I used to be obsessed with this Megan Fox look back in 2007. The actor arrived to a Juno premiere in a vintage Mötley Crüe top and as a massive fan of the glam rock band at the time, I was impressed. This was potentially the catalyst behind my own hoard of Mötley Crüe shirts that I still have to this day. No regrets.

9. Alicia Keys

This cropped and fringed Leon Russell number as worn by the ever talented Alicia Keys is such a perfect item for a party or festival. Props to the singer for wearing this outfit for a good cause while she ran the United Relay Of America to raise money for the We Are Here Movement. An absolute angel.

10. Sky Ferreira

We've got ourselves another Tupac fan. Here's a fairly old picture of the gorgeous Sky Ferreira wearing an oversized band shirt underneath some classic red flannel. Ferreira's personal style always leans to the grungier side of fashion and I absolutely love it.

11. Dree Hemingway

I genuinely would never have thought to wear a band tee with a blazer and trouser co-ord, but thanks Dree Hemingway for the inspiration. Bonus points for the androgynous David Bowie vibes. I will definitely be trying this one out in the near future.

So do all these celebs actually listen to the music they're representing? Probably. I mean, the majority of these musicians are majorly inescapable in our media-obsessed culture. But in the end, it doesn't even matter. They may all style the humble rock tee in slightly different ways, but everyone still looks absolutely amazing.
