5 Officers Killed At Dallas Protest — REPORT

Update 1: Dallas Police Department has confirmed that five officers were killed among the 10 total officers shot.

Just before 8 p.m. CT on Thursday, there was a shooting at protest in Dallas, Texas, that reportedly left at least three local police officers injured and as many as six could have been shot, according to CBS 11. Two are Dallas Police Department (DPD) officers and one is a Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) officer. One of the officers was reportedly taken to Baylor Hospital for surgery. Earlier update: Dallas Police Department chief confirmed that two snipers shot 10 police officers from an elevated distance and three officers have died, Associated Press reported.

Police officers confirmed with CBS 11 that there was an active shooter with an assault rifle in the alley near the Omni Hotel. There were also reports of other active shooters near Omni Hotel in Dallas. At least one shooter was in negotiations with police, according to CBS 11.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing as many as 40 shots fired near the end of the protest march route. Others told local news station CBS 11 that it sounded like the shots were coming from inside a nearby parking garage. Hundreds of residents gathered in downtown Dallas to peacefully protest the recent killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile of Minnesota.

An officer on the scene of the shooting confirmed with Fox News 4 that the officers were struck with bullets, but their conditions are unknown. In a Facebook Live video, a man named Michael Bautista captured the moment when the shooting happened. The video shows the parking garage building surrounded by police cars and you can hear the rapid fire shots going off in the background.

Corey Hughes, one of the organizers of the protest, spoke with CBS 11 in Dallas and said there was "no indication of a threat" prior to the event. Hughes also told CBS 11 that he heard approximately 20 shots fired before local police officers started shooting back.

Police officers continue to arrive on the scene. People from the protest have been waiting outside of Baylor Hospital in downtown Dallas and are unable to get into the hospital.

DPD has instructed everyone to leave downtown Dallas, and they are working to get all the streets cleared. The protest march began around 7 p.m. CT and continued for less than an hour before shots were fired around 7:45 p.m. CT in downtown Dallas.
