Amy Schumer's New Movie Already Sounds Amazing

by Loretta Donelan

The Ghostbusters reboot may have just opened, but that's not the only exciting news for female-driven comedies you'll hear about this weekend. Ghostbusters and The Heat writer Katie Dippold revealed plot details for Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn's action movie on Saturday, and the upcoming film sounds amazing. While the movie doesn't have a title or a release date at this point, Dippold revealed to Collider that the film would be based on her relationship with her mother, saying:

When I was younger, my mom was always very adventurous. Her and my dad divorced when I was in college, and she’s gotten more concerned about safety...I started daydreaming about, what if I took her on a crazy vacation somewhere, and then I took us off the beaten path, just to shake things up. So then, I started thinking about a movie version of that. So, the movie is that. She gets taken off the beaten path, but then everything the mother feared is correct. So, it’s then basically trying to get to an American embassy through the Amazon rainforest and whatnot.

Schumer will play the daughter, while Hawn will play the mother. Previously, all that had been known about the film was that it was a mother/daughter comedy starring the two actors. Hawn has not appeared in a film since 2002's The Banger Sisters, and the reason for her return to the big screen seems to be in part due to her affection for Schumer. “We’re going to hit the balls back and forth," Hawn said to reporters at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability’s “The Champions of Our Planet’s Future” Gala in March, according to EW. "Two women lost in the jungle. It’s going to be so much fun! I love her very much.”

Older women have traditionally been excluded from starring roles in Hollywood movies. While recent films like Hello My Name Is Doris and Grandma have starred older women in complex roles, a 70-year-old woman starring in an action movie is basically unheard of. That's just one of many reasons to be excited for this new movie, one that sounds like a classic buddy comedy, with the twist that the comedy duo at the center will be mother and daughter. Men have typically dominated the buddy comedy genre, though recent films like The Heat and Hot Pursuit have brought that dominance into question. Schumer and Hawn in the jungle sounds like it'll be a total treat.
